Mathematics is a powerful language that we use to understand and describe the world. It helps us do things like counting, measuring, calculating, and even solving complicated problems. And one of the most amazing things mathematics can do is help us understand numbers and how they relate to each other.

Have you heard of natural numbers? They are the ones we use to count objects or people. They start with the number 1 and keep increasing endlessly. For example, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5,... And did you know we can perform operations with these numbers? We can add, subtract, multiply, and even divide. And that's what we're going to talk about in our project.

Introduction

In the world of mathematics, there are different types of numbers. And one of these types is natural numbers less than 100,000. They are like a big family of numbers, each with its own characteristics and peculiarities. And it is precisely about this family that we will learn more.

Let's start by understanding what natural numbers are. As I mentioned before, they are the ones we use for counting. They are infinite, meaning they have no end. They keep increasing one by one, non-stop. For example, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10... and so on.

Now, natural numbers less than 100,000 are just a part of this big family. They range from the number 1 to the number 99,999. Seems like a lot, right? But, in fact, when we start exploring these numbers, we realize they have much more in common than we imagine. And that's what we will discover together throughout this project.

Understanding and comparing natural numbers less than 100,000 is a very important skill. It helps us develop logical reasoning, problem-solving abilities, communication, and even teamwork. Practical Activity: "Exploring and Comparing Natural Numbers Less than 100,000"

Project Objective

This project aims to teach students how to read and compare natural numbers less than 100,000, as well as develop skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, and teamwork.

Project Description

In this activity, students will work in groups of 3 to 5 people to create illustrative posters with a summary table of natural numbers less than 100,000 and their respective comparisons. Each group will be responsible for creating a poster for each of the four basic operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Required Materials

  • Cardboards or large sheets of paper
  • Colored pencils, markers, crayons, etc.
  • Ruler
  • Blunt scissors
  • Glue
  • Old magazines for cutouts (optional)

Step by Step

  1. Group Formation: Form groups of 3 to 5 students and explain to them the nature of the project and the activity they will have to perform.

  2. Task Division: Within each group, students should organize themselves and divide tasks equitably. For example, one student can be responsible for writing the numbers in the table, another for making the drawings, and so on. Remember, collaboration and group communication are essential!

  3. Creating the Tables: On each poster, students should create a 10x10 table, where each cell will contain a natural number less than 100,000. The numbers should be written in ascending order, starting from 1 and going up to 99,999.

  4. Illustrating the Numbers: Now, students should illustrate each number with drawings or magazine cutouts. For example, if the number is 3, they can draw three apples or paste three magazine figures.

  5. Comparing the Numbers: Next to each number, students should write the comparison with the other numbers in the table. For example, if the number is 5, they should write "greater than 1 and less than 10" or "it is double of 2 and half of 10".

  6. Applying the Basic Operations: Finally, students should apply the four basic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) with some pairs of numbers from the table and write the result in the table.

  7. Presenting the Posters: After completion, each group should present their posters to the class, explaining how they carried out each stage of the project.

  8. Project Evaluation: At the end of the presentations, students should evaluate their own performance, as well as that of their group mates, regarding collaboration, communication, creativity, and understanding of the mathematical concepts explored.
