Contextualization

Hello, dear students! Today we will embark on a mathematical adventure where we will explore the world of prisms and pyramids. Do you know those tall and imposing buildings we see in the city? They are an example of prisms and pyramids, just on a much larger scale. These geometric shapes are everywhere, and by understanding their concepts, we can better comprehend the world around us.

In addition, we will get to know an important concept: planification. Do you know when we unfold a cardboard box to form a flat drawing? That's a planification! It is a flat representation of a three-dimensional object and is a very useful tool in mathematics and many other areas of knowledge.

Introduction

Let's start by talking about prisms. They are geometric solids that have two parallel bases and rectangular or square sides. Buildings and shoeboxes are examples of prisms. Pyramids, on the other hand, are solids that have a base and triangular sides that meet at a single point, called the vertex. Crystal pyramids and the pyramids of Egypt are examples of pyramids.

Now, what are planifications? As we have already mentioned, they are flat drawings that represent three-dimensional objects. Remember that cardboard box we unfolded? It is the planification of a cube, a type of prism. Planification helps us visualize and better understand the characteristics of a three-dimensional object.

Importance

Understanding prisms and pyramids is very important. After all, they are all around us: in constructions, in the objects we use in our daily lives, in nature. By learning to recognize them, we can see mathematics in the real world and understand how geometry is present in our daily lives.

Now, you must be wondering: why do we need to learn about planifications? Well, planification is an essential skill for life. It helps us better understand how things are made, solve problems, and communicate our ideas more clearly. When we can transform a three-dimensional object into a planification, we are enhancing our spatial thinking and visualization skills, two very valuable competencies in various areas of knowledge, such as mathematics, art, engineering, and many others. So, get ready, because our project will be an incredible journey of discoveries and learning about prisms, pyramids, and planifications. Let's go together!

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "My House in Planifications"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is for you, in groups, to build a model of a house using prisms and pyramids, and then produce the planifications of these geometric shapes. In addition to applying mathematical concepts, you will also develop teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and creativity skills.

Detailed Project Description

In this project, you will be architects and mathematicians at the same time! Firstly, each group should design a house using prisms and pyramids. You can use materials such as cardboard, popsicle sticks, glue, scissors, colored pencils, and markers to build the model. Remember that the house must have at least one prism, which can be a cube or a rectangular prism, and one pyramid, which can be a cone or a square-based pyramid.

After building the model, you should draw the planifications of the geometric shapes used. To do this, carefully unfold the model and trace the outlines of the faces on paper. Finally, write the name of each drawn plane.

  • Cardboard
  • Popsicle sticks
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Colored pencils
  • Markers
  • Paper

Detailed Step-by-Step

  1. Group Formation: Divide into groups of 3 to 5 students.

  2. House Planning: In each group, discuss and draw the design of the house you will build. Remember that the house must have at least one prism and one pyramid.

  3. House Construction: Using the available materials, build the model of the house. Remember that you can cut the cardboard and glue the pieces to form the desired shapes. Use scissors carefully!

  4. Planification of Shapes: Now, carefully unfold the model and, on a piece of paper, draw the planifications of each shape used. Remember to write the name of each drawn plane.

  5. Project Presentation: Finally, each group should present their house model and explain the planifications they drew. You can talk about the shapes used, their characteristics, and how they make up the house.

Delivery Format

Each group must deliver the house model and the drawn planifications. Additionally, they must present the project to the class, explaining what they learned about prisms, pyramids, and planifications. Remember: creativity and everyone's participation will be valued in the evaluation!
