Our days are marked by 'missing' elements. How many times do we ask 'how much is left to arrive?' on a trip or how much money is still needed to buy something desired? The mathematical operations of addition and subtraction with missing values are present in our daily lives, often without us realizing it.

Through the understanding and practice of this concept, we are able to solve everyday problems and face increasingly complex challenges.
Introduction
Addition and subtraction are the basic operations of Mathematics that we all learn in Elementary School. They are the building blocks we need to understand more complicated operations like multiplication and division. But what happens when one of the values in these operations is missing? This is the challenge we will face in this project!
Addition is the operation that combines quantities, while subtraction is the operation that takes one quantity away from another. When we work with missing values, we are exercising logic and reasoning, as we need to find out which number completes the operation.
The concept of missing value helps us understand the structure of addition and subtraction operations in a deeper way. It teaches us to think beyond the operation itself and to use our mathematical knowledge in new and creative ways.

Project Description
Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 to become 'math detectives'. They will receive a series of 'cases' (math problems) involving addition and subtraction with missing values, which they must solve together.
Each case will have a 'crime scene' (description of the problem) and 'clues' that will help the students solve the problems. They must record their solutions and reasoning process in a mathematical investigation journal, which will serve as the basis for the final report.
Required Materials
- Notebook or sheets of paper for the mathematical investigation journal.
- Pens, pencils, erasers.
- Pre-prepared addition and subtraction problems with missing values by the teacher.
- Books and online materials, as recommended in the 'Resources' section of the Introduction, for reference.
Step by Step
- Divide students into groups of 3 to 5.
- Explain the concept of addition and subtraction with missing values using practical examples.
- Introduce the 'math detectives' activity to the students and explain how it will work.
- Distribute the 'cases' (problems) and 'clues' to each group.
- During a period of two to four hours, the groups should work together to solve the problems. They must record their solutions and reasoning process in the mathematical investigation journal.
- After completing the practical activity, the groups will use the mathematical investigation journal to write a final report. The report should include the Introduction (context and relevance of the theme, project objective), Development (theory, activities performed, methodology, results), and Conclusion (main learning, project conclusions). Additionally, it should have a Bibliography section listing the sources used for consultation.
- The final report must be submitted one week after the practical activity.
Students should demonstrate, through the report, an understanding of the theory involved, the ability to work in a team, solve problems and think logically, as well as manage time efficiently throughout the project.
