Introduction

Equality is a fundamental concept in mathematics and in life in general. It establishes that two values or expressions are equivalent, that is, they have the same value. However, equality goes far beyond just a symbol. It represents balance, justice, and fairness. Equality is essential in mathematics so that we can solve equations, understand proportions, identify symmetries, and much more.

The study of equality in mathematics is the basis for understanding many other fundamental concepts, such as basic arithmetic operations, algebra, and calculations. Without understanding what equality is, it would be impossible, for example, to solve a simple equation or identify whether an equation is true or false.

Equality also plays an important role in helping children develop logical thinking, as it requires them to analyze and compare quantities or values to determine if they are equivalent. This process demands reasoning and problemsolving skills that are essential for academic and personal development.

Contextualization

Equality is present in all aspects of our lives. In mathematics, we use equality to solve problems and equations. However, outside the mathematical context, equality helps us understand and fight for social issues, such as equal rights and opportunities for all, regardless of color, gender, religion, or socioeconomic status.

Our society is based on the idea that everyone should be treated equally, and understanding mathematical equality can help us better understand this idea of social equality. Just as in mathematics, where the goal is to keep both sides of an equation balanced, in real life, we seek a balance where everyone has the same opportunities and is treated fairly.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "The Balance of Equality"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to allow students to deeply understand the concept of mathematical equality through a practical activity of building and manipulating a balance. After the activity, students will be able to recognize a mathematical equality and will be able to find unknown values in an equation.

In parallel with mathematics, students will learn and reflect on social equality by associating the balance of the scale with the issue of equity in society. In this way, the project will encompass the disciplines of mathematics and social sciences.

Detailed Project Description

Students, organized in groups of 3 to 5 members, will build and use a balance to visualize and solve simple mathematical equations, exploring the concept of equality. The activity will be divided into three parts: building the balance, using the balance to solve equations, and discussing/reflecting on equality in mathematics and society.

Required Materials

  • Plastic hangers
  • String
  • Scissors
  • Weights of various values (small objects like clips, erasers, etc. can be used)
  • Paper and pen for notes

Detailed Step-by-Step

Part 1: Building the Balance

  1. Students will use a plastic hanger and strings to build a simple balance. The hanger will be the scale, and the strings will be used to hang the weights.

  2. Students should make markings on the base of the hanger to represent numbers or units.

  3. The weights should be properly cataloged and prepared to be used in the activity.

Part 2: Using the Balance

  1. Using the balance, students must solve several equations proposed by the teacher. The equations can be simple, like 2+3=5, or more complex, like 4+__=7-1.

  2. Students should take notes of their observations during the activity, recording how they manipulated the balance to achieve equilibrium and solve the proposed equations.

Part 3: Discussion

  1. As a final activity, students must reflect and discuss the concept of equality both in mathematics and in society. They can discuss, for example, how the balance represents the pursuit of equity and justice in our society.

Project Deliverables

To complete the project, students must write a detailed report containing:

  1. Introduction: Contextualization of the equality theme, explaining its relevance and application in the real world and the project's objective.

  2. Development: Theoretical description of the concept of mathematical equality, detailed description of the activity carried out with the balance, including the methodology used and the results obtained.

  3. Conclusion: Recap of the main points, explanation of the learnings obtained, and the conclusions drawn about the project, especially regarding the representation of equality in mathematics and society.

  4. Bibliography: Indication of the sources used to support the work.

The report should be an extension of the practical work, containing reflections, discoveries, and conclusions of the students. The activity with the balance should be the basis for a deeper discussion about equality and its importance in both mathematics and society.
