Mathematics is present in our everyday lives, even though we may not always notice it. One of the concepts that we use daily, even if we do not realize it, is that of probability. Have you ever stopped to think about the probability of rain tomorrow? Of getting a 10 on the next test? Or even of winning a raffle? This is where the concepts of probable and improbable come in.

Knowing how to calculate the probability of an event occurring allows us to make better decisions and plan for the future. For example, if the probability of rain tomorrow is very high, you will most likely take an umbrella when you leave home. If the probability of winning the lottery is very low, you might think twice before spending your money on tickets. Understanding probability can also help us avoid unpleasant surprises because we can better predict the possible outcomes of our actions.

Probability is a measure between 0 and 1 indicating how often we expect an event to occur. If the probability of an event is equal to 1, we are certain it will occur. If the probability is equal to 0, then we are certain that it will not occur. Everything else is a game of chance and uncertainty.

Probability is particularly important when we are dealing with large amounts of data. For example, businesses use probability methods to analyze market trends, physicians use them to analyze the probability of a patient having a certain disease, meteorologists use them to forecast the weather, and many other examples.

In this project, we will explore the concept of probability through real-life situations such as games, drawings, and predictions. Let's learn how to calculate the probability of different events and understand what it means to say that something is "probable" or "improbable."

Practical Activity: "The Game of Probabilities"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is for students to understand and apply the concepts of "probable" and "improbable" by creating and participating in a board game that involves real-life situations and probability calculations.

Project Description

Students will create a board game in teams of 3 to 5 people. The board should be divided into several spaces and each space should include a question or challenge about probability. For example, one space could say: "What is the probability of rolling a 6 on a six-sided die?" Students should research, create and resolve the challenges by using the concepts of probability, in a project that brings together creativity, problem-solving and mathematical knowledge.

Required Materials

  • Large piece of cardboard or paperboard (for the board)
  • Colorful markers, crayons and/or paints
  • Dices (preferably 6-sided)
  • Game pieces (can be small objects or magnets)
  • Paper and a pen (to write down the answers)

Step by Step

  1. Divide the class into teams of 3 to 5 students.

  2. Each team should create a game board with several spaces. Each space should contain a probability-related question or challenge.

  3. The questions or challenges could involve real-life situations (e.g., the probability of rain tomorrow) or games (e.g., the probability of drawing a particular card from a deck of cards).

  4. Students should research and calculate the answers to each question or challenge.

  5. Once the board is ready, each group should "play" the game, resolving the challenges as they advance on the board.

  6. The students should record in detail the project's implementation including the creation of the game, the process of research and calculations, the answers to the challenges and their reflections on what they have learned.

  7. Each group should also prepare a presentation for the class explaining the game and what they learned about probability.

Project Deliveries

Teams should deliver:

  1. The finalized board game;
  2. A detailed report about the process including the answers to the challenges;
  3. An oral presentation for the class.

The report should be written according to the following structure:

  1. Introduction: Brief presentation of the project, its objective, the relevance of probability and its real-life applications.
  2. Development: Detailed explanation of all project phases: creation of the game, research done, answers to probability challenges. The answers and theories used to reach the answers should be included here.
  3. Conclusions: Summary of the experience developing the project and learning achieved along the way, difficulties encountered and how they were overcome. Discussion about the real-world applicability of probability concepts.
  4. References: List of references used in the development of the project, including books, sites, videos, etc.
