For example, if we have 12 apples and we want to divide them equally among 5 people, we find out that each person receives 2 apples and there are 2 apples left. These 2 apples are the 'remainder' of the division.

Now, you must be wondering: 'Why is this important?'. Well, understanding remainders of division helps us in many real-life situations. For example, when we are going to divide a cake among our friends, we can't always divide it equally. So, understanding how the remainder of division works helps us share the cake fairly.

Students, in groups of 3 to 5, will create a 'City of Remainders' on a large poster or panel. In this city, they will represent the remainders of division through scenarios and stories. Each group must create at least 5 scenarios/stories. For example, they can represent a situation where children are dividing apples and there are remainders, or a situation where cars are being parked in a line and there are empty spaces.

Materials Needed:

  • Large cardboard or poster board
  • Colored pencils, colored pens, crayons, etc.
  • Blunt scissors
  • Glue
  • Old magazines for cutting out (optional)
  • Ruler (optional)

Detailed Step-by-Step:

  1. Group Formation: Students should organize themselves into groups of 3 to 5 people. It is important that the groups are heterogeneous, meaning that they have students with different skills and ways of thinking.

  2. Planning the City of Remainders: Each group should think and discuss how they want to build their 'City of Remainders'. They should decide which scenarios/stories they want to represent and how they will do it.
