Units of Measurement: Temperature

Context

Temperature is a concept we use every day. It tells us if it's hot or cold, helps us decide what to wear, and even lets us know if the food is ready. But have you ever stopped to think about how we measure temperature? And why do we use Celsius, Fahrenheit, or Kelvin?

When we talk about temperature, we are actually talking about how hot or cold an object or place is. And to measure this, we use the so-called temperature scales. The most well-known is the Celsius scale, which is used in many countries, including Brazil. Zero on the Celsius scale is the freezing point of water and 100 is the boiling point. The Fahrenheit scale, widely used in the United States, has a freezing point of water at 32 degrees and a boiling point at 212 degrees. Finally, we have the Kelvin scale, which is mainly used in science. In it, absolute zero is the coldest possible temperature, where the particles of an object stop moving.

But why do we have different temperature scales? This happens because each of them was created at different times and places, by people who needed to measure temperature in different ways. Over time, these scales have been refined and today we use different systems for different situations.

The Importance of the Unit of Measure: Temperature

Learning about the different temperature scales is important because it helps us better understand the world around us. For example, if you know that the freezing temperature of water is 0 degrees Celsius, you can understand that if it's below that, the water will freeze. Similarly, if you know that the boiling point of water is 100 degrees Celsius, you can understand that if the temperature is above that, the water will boil.

Moreover, knowing about the different temperature scales also helps us communicate better. If you travel to a country where the Fahrenheit scale is used, you will need to know how to convert temperatures. And if you want to talk about the temperature of a place with someone from another country, you will also need to know which scale to use.

So, learning about temperature measurement units and how to convert them is a very useful skill that we all should have. And that's what we will explore in this project. Let's find out more about the Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin scales, and also learn how to convert temperatures from one scale to another. Ready for the adventure?

Practical Activity: "The Great Journey of Temperatures"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to allow students to explore the different temperature scales (Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin) and understand the conversion between them. Students will work in groups to create a "Temperature Board Game," where each square on the board will represent a temperature in one of the three scales. Players will have to convert the temperature to the other scales during the game.

Project Description

In this project, students will create a board game that simulates a journey through the "World of Temperatures." The board will be a path that players must travel, and at each square on the board there will be a temperature in one of the three scales: Celsius, Fahrenheit, or Kelvin. Players will roll a die and move along the board. When they land on a square, they must draw a card that will indicate the temperature at that square and the scale it is in. Players must then convert the temperature to the other two scales before they can move forward again.

Required Materials

  • Cardboard or cardboard to make the board
  • Colored markers, colored pencils, or paint to draw and color the board
  • Ruler and compass (optional, to draw the board path)
  • Cardboard or paper to make the temperature cards
  • Die
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Books, internet, or educational materials for research on temperature scales

Step by Step

  1. Group Formation: Divide the class into groups of 3 to 5 students. Each group will be responsible for creating a game.

  2. Research: Encourage the groups to research the temperature scales (Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin) and how to convert between them. They can use textbooks, the internet, or any other available material.

  3. Game Planning: The groups should plan their board game. They must define the game theme (the journey through the "World of Temperatures"), the number of squares on the board, how many temperature cards there will be, and what the rules will be for moving forward or backward on the board.

  4. Board Creation: Using cardboard or cardboard, the groups should draw their board. They can use the ruler and compass to draw the path, and then they should color and decorate the board.

  5. Creation of Temperature Cards: The groups should create the temperature cards. Each card should have a temperature in one of the three scales and indicate which scale that temperature is in. They should make enough cards to fill all the squares on the board.

  6. Game Preparation: When the board and cards are ready, the groups should review the game rules and prepare to teach it to the class.

  7. Game Presentation: Each group will present their game to the class. They should explain the rules, show the board and cards, and demonstrate how to play. All students will have the chance to play the game from each group.

Remember that the main objective of the project is to learn about temperature scales and how to convert them. Therefore, during the game presentation, students should explain how they made the temperature conversions. This will help reinforce the concept and enhance learning.
