Hello, dear students! Let's embark on an incredible mathematical journey, where we will discover how knowledge of numbers and mathematical operations is applied in our daily lives. Have you ever wondered why coins and bills have different values? Or how discounts work when we make purchases? Or even, what is change and how is it calculated?

Well, the answer to all these questions lies in Value Equivalence. This means that each value that a coin or bill represents has a specific meaning. For example, a R$ 10.00 bill is equivalent to 10 R$ 1.00 bills. But how can we know this? That's where mathematics comes in!

Introduction

Mathematics is like a language that helps us understand and describe the world around us. And when we talk about Value Equivalence, we are using mathematics to understand the value of things. Let's start with something we all know: coins.

Coins have different values, don't they? We have coins of R$ 0.01, R$ 0.05, R$ 0.10, R$ 0.25, R$ 0.50, and R$ 1.00. Each of these coins represents a specific value. Knowing the value of each coin is essential so that we can make purchases, pay for what we want, and receive change correctly.

And what is change? Well, when we buy something, we pay a certain amount and if we pay more than necessary, we receive change. Change is precisely the difference between the amount we paid and the value of the product. Understanding the concept of change and how it is calculated is very important so that we can manage our money efficiently.

And finally, discounts. When we go shopping, we often see products on sale. But what does that mean? A discount is when the value of the product is reduced. And to know the value of the product with a discount, we need to know how to do some Value Equivalence calculations.

So, let's go! Get ready to become true masters in Value Equivalence: Discount and Change!

Practical Activity: "The Math Shop"

Project Objective

In this activity, we will simulate a little shop where you will be able to explore and apply the concepts of Value Equivalence: Discount and Change. The goal is for you to practice the skill of calculating change and discounted value, as well as reinforce your knowledge about Brazilian coins and bills.

Project Description

You, divided into groups of 3 to 5 students, will create a shop with fictional products, prices, and packaging. Each group will be responsible for managing their shop and serving customers. With each purchase, you will calculate the change and, if you want, you can offer special discounts to customers.

Required Materials

  • Colored cardboard or cardstock
  • Colored pens
  • Glue
  • Blunt scissors
  • Magazines for cutouts
  • Ruler
  • Toy coins and bills (optional)

Step by Step

  1. Product Selection and Prices: Each group must choose at least 5 different products to sell in their shop. The products can be magazines, drawings, fruits, or anything your imagination allows. Then, set a price for each product. Remember to use both reais and cents.

  2. Packaging Creation: With the cardboard or cardstock, you will create the packaging for the products. Draw the packaging and cut them out. You can use colored pens to decorate.

  3. Shop Setup: Now it's time to set up the shop! Use the packaging you created to display the products. You can create shelves, baskets, or anything else that helps organize the shop.

  4. Sales Simulation: With the shop ready, it's time to start sales! Each group member will take turns as the seller. When a customer chooses a product, the seller must write down the product's value and the amount the customer gave.

  5. Change Calculation: Now, it's time to calculate the change. The seller must subtract the product's value from the amount the customer gave. The result is the change the customer should receive.

  6. Special Discount: If you want, you can offer special discounts to customers. To do this, the seller must calculate the new product value with the discount and then calculate the change.

  7. Sales Record: To finish, each group must make a record of their sales. Write down the product's name, the product's value, the amount the customer gave, the change the customer received, and the total sales of the shop.

At the end of the activity, each group should present their sales record to the class. This will help everyone better understand the concepts of Value Equivalence: Discount and Change. Remember, the most important thing is to have fun while learning!
