Contextualization

Multiplication and division are the two out of four fundamental arithmetic operations. They are essential math skills that we use every day, whether it's when we are shopping, sharing a pizza with friends, measuring distances, or converting measurements. Together with addition and subtraction, multiplication and division form the basis of everything we do in mathematics.

Division is considered the inverse operation of multiplication. This relationship between the two operations is crucial for understanding how we manipulate and solve mathematical problems. For this interaction to be understood, the consolidation of the concepts of multiplication and division is essential.

Introduction

This project is intended for the study and practice of multiplication and division. In addition to understanding the mechanism of these operations, we will delve into the concepts of multiplicand, multiplier (or factors) and product in multiplication, and of quotient, divisor, dividend, and remainder in division.

Understanding these operations is like learning to build the foundation of a building. If this base is strong and well built, the building will have a solid structure to support its entire weight. The foundation of the building is like multiplication and division in mathematics—the basis for studying more advanced topics.

In the context of mathematics, multiplication can be seen as a repeated addition. It is a fast and efficient way to add the same number several times. Division, on the other hand, can be seen as a 'sharing' or 'measurement' operation. That is, if we have a certain number of items and we want to divide them equally among a certain number of groups, we use division.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: The Wonderful World of Multiplication and Division

Project Goal:

This project aims to explore, understand, and apply, in a playful and practical way, the fundamental concepts of multiplication and division. Through this activity, students will be able to acquire a deeper understanding of the concepts involved in these operations and learn how to apply them in everyday situations.

In addition, this interdisciplinary project covers the disciplines of Arts and Social Sciences, as it includes elements of board game construction and resource management. The project also aims to provide students with an opportunity to develop socio-emotional skills such as teamwork, time management, problem-solving, and critical thinking.

Detailed Description of the Project:

Students will work in groups of 3 to 5 to create a board game based on multiplication and division. The game should include challenges that require players to solve multiplication and division problems in order to advance. In addition, the game should have a resource management component, requiring players to collect, spend, and earn "points" (or any resource of their choice) through multiplication and division.

Necessary Materials:

  1. Cardboard or poster board for the game board base
  2. Colored paper, markers, and crayons for decorating the game board
  3. Small objects or tokens to be used as game pieces
  4. Dice
  5. Printed game rules
  6. Envelopes with cards containing the multiplication and division challenges

Detailed Step-by-Step Instructions for the Activity:

Day 1 - 4: Game Planning and Design (6 hours)

  1. Students brainstorm ideas and decide on the theme and name of their game.
  2. Design the game board layout, which should include a starting point, an ending point, and paths that players will follow.
  3. Create the game rules. The rules should include how players move around the board (e.g., rolling a die), how multiplication and division challenges are presented, and how resources are gained and lost.

Day 5 - 8: Game Construction (6 hours)

  1. Use cardboard or poster board to create the game board.
  2. Add markers, stickers, or drawings to represent the different spaces or stages of the game.
  3. Create challenge cards with multiplication and division problems that players must solve during the game.
  4. Choose or create game pieces for each player.

Day 9 - 12: Playing and Adjusting the Game (6 hours)

  1. Each group plays their game multiple times to ensure that it is working properly. During this process, they may adjust the rules or challenges as needed.

Day 13 - 15: Report Production (6 hours)

  1. The group will produce a report that includes: Introduction (contextualizing the game and its relevance to multiplication and division learning), Development (detailed description of the game, with rules and examples of challenges), Conclusions (reflections on the process and what was learned), and Bibliography (sources of resources and inspiration).

Project Deliverables:

  1. Board Game: The board game should be presented in an attractive and coherent manner with the rules established by the group. It should be easy to play and the challenges should be consistent with the concepts of multiplication and division.

  2. Report: The report should be clear and include all of the suggested topics: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography. Details and examples should be provided for each section. Sources should be properly cited. The report should reflect teamwork, engagement with the project, and understanding of the concepts of multiplication and division.
