Hello, class! Welcome to a fascinating journey through the world of science. Let's start by talking about the Cycle of Matter and Energy. But what exactly is that?

Imagine our planet as a large laboratory. In it, all elements, such as air, water, soil, plants, animals, and even us, humans, are connected in an incredible way. In this large laboratory, matter (which are all things that have mass and occupy space, like a chair, a book, a flower) and energy (which are all things that enable matter to move or do work, like sunlight, heat from fire, and energy from food) are constantly moving and transforming.

For example, when a plant undergoes photosynthesis, it transforms sunlight into energy, which is used for its survival and growth. When an animal eats this plant, it obtains the energy and matter necessary to live. When this animal dies, the matter of its body decomposes and returns to the environment, providing nutrients for the plants. And so, the cycle of matter and the flow of energy continue.

Understanding how this cycle occurs is essential for us to comprehend the complexity and beauty of nature, as well as to help us find ways to live in harmony with our planet. And that's exactly what we are going to explore in this project.

Introduction

Cycle of Matter is the continuous movement of essential chemical elements for life, such as carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and water, among the different components of the Earth system. This cycle includes processes like photosynthesis, respiration, and decomposition.

Energy Flow, on the other hand, is the movement of energy through living beings and the environment. Energy, which mainly comes from the sun, is captured by plants during photosynthesis and then flows through the food chain as animals feed on other animals or plants.

In this project, we will explore how the cycle of matter and the flow of energy are interconnected, and how these processes are essential for the maintenance of life on our planet. Are you ready for this amazing scientific adventure?

Practical Activity: "Cycle of Matter and Energy Flow on Planet Earth"

Project Objective

The objective of the project is to allow students to explore, in a practical and fun way, the concept of Cycle of Matter and Energy Flow, developing a deeper understanding of the interconnection of these processes in nature.

Detailed Project Description

Students, organized in small groups, will create a "Terrarium" (a miniature ecosystem inside a closed container) to observe and study the cycle of matter and the flow of energy. Through this activity, they will realize how matter (nutrients, water, air) and energy (sunlight) move and are recycled in the ecosystem.

The terrariums will be divided into two parts: a "Light Zone" (where sunlight reaches) and a "Dark Zone" (where sunlight does not reach). Each of these zones represents a different habitat, with different types of plants and animals.

Necessary Materials

  • Transparent containers (glass jars, small aquariums, cut plastic bottles)
  • Soil
  • Various plant seeds
  • Small plants
  • Small stones
  • Water
  • Adhesive tape
  • Cardboard paper
  • Permanent marker
  • Magnifying glass (optional)

Step by Step

Phase 1: Planning

  1. Group Formation: Divide the class into groups of 3 to 5 students.

  2. Preparatory Study: Each group should research about the cycle of matter and energy flow, noting down the main information and concepts.

  3. Terrarium Definition: Each group must choose the type of terrarium they will build, considering the plants and animals they will include. Remember that it is necessary to have a "Light Zone" and a "Dark Zone".

  4. Project Elaboration: The students should draw and write the terrarium plan, indicating where each element will be placed and how they will observe and record changes over time.

Phase 2: Terrarium Construction

  1. Container Preparation: Clean the chosen container and let it dry well.

  2. Terrarium Layers: Place a layer of small stones at the bottom of the container (this will help drain the water). Then, add a sufficient layer of soil for the plants.

  3. Planting: Plant the seeds or small plants in the soil.

  4. Zone Preparation: Divide the terrarium into two zones, using pieces of cardboard paper and adhesive tape. Make sure each zone has an adequate amount of soil, plants, and water.

Phase 3: Observation and Recording

  1. Location: Place the terrarium in a location where it can receive sunlight, but avoid direct light and intense heat.

  2. Observation: Daily, students should observe their terrarium, noting any changes in plant color, soil, water quantity, presence of animals, etc.

  3. Recording: Each observation should be recorded in a logbook, with drawings, words, and if possible, photos. Students should try to explain what is happening, relating it to the concepts learned about the cycle of matter and energy flow.

Phase 4: Project Presentation

At the end of the activity, each group will present their terrarium to the class, explaining how it was built, the observations made, and the conclusions reached.

Important Reminder: Terrariums are small ecosystems and need care. Make sure to water the plants properly and keep the terrarium clean. And remember, this is a team project, so everyone should participate and contribute.
