Fungi and bacteria are part of a group of living beings called decomposers. Have you heard of this word before? Well, decomposers are those that help 'recycle' nature. They are responsible for transforming dead matter, such as fallen leaves and dead animals, into nutrients that plants can use to grow! Amazing, isn't it?

Introduction

In this project, we will focus on the decomposition of organic waste. But, what are organic waste? They are all remains of living beings, such as fruit peels, leaves, food scraps, and even animal feces. They are very important for decomposers, as they provide them with the energy and nutrients they need to live.

Fungi and bacteria play a fundamental role in the decomposition of organic waste. Fungi are like small 'recyclers' of nature. They secrete substances that break down organic matter into smaller pieces, facilitating the work of bacteria. In turn, bacteria are microorganisms that feed on these small pieces and transform them into nutrients that plants can use.

Understanding how decomposition works is very important because it allows us to comprehend the importance of fungi and bacteria for the balance of life on Earth. Furthermore, it helps us understand how we can better deal with our waste, reducing the impact it has on the environment.

Practical Activity: 'Decomposition Cycle'

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to understand the importance of decomposition carried out by fungi and bacteria in the cycle of life, in order to raise awareness about the importance of recycling and proper waste disposal.

Project Description

In this activity, students will simulate the process of decomposing organic waste using simple materials. Over a few weeks, they will observe how fungi and bacteria act in this process and what becomes of the organic waste after decomposition.

Required Materials

  • 4 transparent glass jars
  • 4 types of organic waste (e.g. a cut apple, a leaf, a piece of bread, an eggshell)
  • Water
  • Paper and pen for notes
  • Internet access (for research on the topic)

Step by Step

  1. Group Formation: Divide the class into groups of 3 to 5 students. Each group will be responsible for a jar.

  2. Selection of Organic Waste: Each group should choose a type of organic waste to put inside the jar. Remember, each jar should have a different type of waste.

  3. Jar Assembly: Add some water to each jar, enough to moisten the organic waste, but without drowning it. Close the jars tightly.

  4. Observation and Note-Taking: Each week, the groups should open one of the jars and observe what is happening to the organic waste. Write down your observations, draw what you see, and discuss in the group about what you are discovering.

  5. Research: Throughout the process, the groups should conduct research on fungi, bacteria, and decomposition. Write down your findings and share them with your classmates.

  6. Conclusions: After several weeks, when all the organic waste is decomposed, the groups should discuss what they have learned. They should think about how fungi and bacteria act in decomposition, what are the ideal conditions for this to happen, and the importance of this process for nature.

  7. Presentation of Results: Each group should prepare a brief presentation for the class, sharing their discoveries and showing the notes and drawings they made throughout the project.

Project Delivery

The project delivery will be done through the group's presentation to the class. However, each group must deliver at the end of the project a notebook of notes where they recorded all observations and research conducted. This notebook will be evaluated for the quality and quantity of information, clarity, and organization of the records.
