Introduction
Fungi and bacteria are two types of microorganisms found everywhere, from the highest mountain to the bottom of the sea. They are so small that we can't see them with the naked eye, but they play a huge role in nature. Fungi, for example, are responsible for decomposing wood, leaves, and other organic materials. Bacteria, besides decomposing organic matter, also help fix nitrogen from the air, making it available to plants. Without these two groups of microorganisms, life as we know it would not be possible.

Understanding how these microorganisms work can help us solve many problems we currently face. Practical Activity: 'Decomposition Explorers'
Project Objective
The objective of this project is to allow students to understand the importance of fungi and bacteria in the decomposition process, and how it affects ecological balance.
Project Description
In this project, students will simulate the decomposition process of a piece of fruit, observing and recording the changes that occur over time. They will also research the fungi and bacteria involved in this process, and present their findings to the class.
Materials Needed
- 4 pieces of fruit (e.g., apple, orange, banana, grape)
- 4 transparent plastic bags (ziplock type)
- Notebook for notes
- Colored pencils and markers
- Access to the internet or books for research
Step by Step

Group Formation: Divide into groups of 3 to 5 students. Each group will be responsible for a type of fruit.

Sample Preparation: Each group should take a piece of the assigned fruit and place it inside a plastic bag. Make sure the bag is securely closed.

Initial Recording: In the notebook, draw the fruit before placing it in the plastic bag. Also, write down some observations about the fruit's appearance.

Decomposition Simulation: Place the plastic bags with the fruits in a location where you can observe them daily. Remember not to open the bags, as this may interfere with the decomposition process.

Recording Changes: Every two days, carefully open the plastic bag and observe the fruit. Make a new drawing of the fruit and write about the changes you noticed. For example, is the fruit softer? Is it darker? Are there any spots?

Research: While the fruits are decomposing, each group should research the types of fungi and bacteria commonly found in the decomposition of the assigned fruit. Take note of the most important information in the notebook.
