Have you ever stopped to think about how our favorite foods, like bread, yogurt, or cheese, are made? They go through a transformation process called fermentation, in which microorganisms play a fundamental role. In fermentation, microorganisms consume some components of the foods, such as sugar, and produce new substances, such as carbon dioxide and alcohol, which give flavor and texture to the foods.

The Importance of Microorganisms

Microorganisms are present in many aspects of our lives, and food production is one of them. In addition to contributing to the taste and texture of many foods we consume, they can also produce important nutrients, such as vitamins and fatty acids. Furthermore, fermentation, a process in which microorganisms are used, can also help preserve foods, avoiding waste.

However, not all microorganisms are beneficial for food production. Some can cause diseases, such as salmonella and listeria, if not properly controlled. Therefore, it is very important to understand and know how to handle these small beings.
