Hello, young space explorers! Are you ready to embark on an incredible journey through our solar system? In this project, we will focus on two of the celestial bodies closest to us: the Moon, our natural satellite, and Earth, our lovely planet. We will learn about the cyclical movements of the Moon around Earth and Earth around the Sun.
But why is it so important to understand these movements? Well, they are the basis of many of the natural phenomena that we, humans, observe every day. They influence the cycle of seasons, the phases of the Moon, the tides, and even the duration of our day and night!
Introduction
1. Earth's Rotation
Let's start with Earth's rotation. Earth spins around an imaginary axis that passes through the North and South poles. This movement is called rotation. Earth's rotation is the reason we have days and nights. When a part of Earth is facing the Sun, it is daytime in that region. When it is facing away from the Sun, it is nighttime.
2. Earth's Revolution
Now, let's talk about Earth's revolution. Revolution is the movement of Earth around the Sun. It takes about 365 days for Earth to complete one orbit around the Sun. That's why we have years. Additionally, Earth's revolution is also responsible for the seasons. Due to Earth's tilted axis, sunlight reaches different parts of the globe in different ways throughout the year, causing the different seasons.
3. Moon Phases
Now, let's move on to the Moon. The Moon also has two main movements: rotation and revolution. But unlike Earth, the Moon takes the same amount of time to rotate around itself and around Earth - about 27.3 days. Because of this, we always see the same face of the Moon.
These are just a few of the fascinating concepts we will explore in this project. Understanding these movements not only helps us better comprehend our planet and the space around us, but also appreciate the beauty and complexity of the universe we live in. Practical Activity: 'Lunar Adventure: Exploring the Cyclical Movements of the Moon and Earth'
Project Objective
The objective of this project is for students to understand and visualize the cyclical movements of the Moon and Earth through observations and practical experiments. Additionally, groups will need to create an illustrated logbook in which they will record their discoveries and reflections during the 'lunar expedition'.
Project Description
Each group of students will be 'sent' on a mission to the Moon! They will have to monitor the Moon phases over a month (i.e., a complete lunar cycle) and observe how the Moon moves across the sky each night. They will also need to record the changes in light and shadow on our planet, Earth, throughout the day during the same period.
Required Materials
- Access to an outdoor space where the sky can be observed.
- Pencils and paper for notes.
- A4 paper sheets for drawings.
- Colored pencils, markers, crayons, etc.
- Online resources, such as videos and images, to aid in understanding the concepts (under adult supervision).
Step by Step

Task Division: Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people. Each group should choose a leader to coordinate the activities and a secretary to take notes during the experiments.

Moon Observation: Over a month, the group should observe the Moon every night. They should draw how the Moon looks and note in which direction it is and at what time they see it. They should also note if the Moon is visible during the day.

Sun Observation: In addition to observing the Moon, the group should also observe the Sun every day. They should note the times when the Sun rises and sets, and its height in the sky at noon. They should also note if the Sun is higher or lower in the sky throughout the month.

Logbook Development: During the month, the group's secretary should record all observations made about the Moon and the Sun. Additionally, students should discuss and reflect on their observations. They can answer questions like: 'Why does the Moon look different every night?' and 'Why is the Sun higher in the sky in summer than in winter?'.

Project Completion: At the end of the month, each group should create an illustrated logbook. They should include their drawings of the Moon and the Sun, their notes on the observations made, and their reflections and answers to the questions. The logbook should be presented to the teacher and the class.
