Nature is a vast system, composed of many small systems. One of these systems is what we call a food chain. A food chain is the way energy passes from one organism to another through food. This happens because all living beings need energy to live, and food is the source of that energy.
But how does energy pass from one organism to another? Well, it all starts with plants. Plants are called producers because they produce their own food through photosynthesis. Animals that eat plants, like cows, are called primary consumers. Then we have secondary consumers, who eat the primary consumers. And so on, until we reach decomposers, like fungi and bacteria, that feed on plant and animal remains and turn them into nutrients for plants.
Introduction
Food chains are essential for the survival of all living beings. They help us understand how energy flows through ecosystems. Furthermore, food chains also have a significant impact on ecological balance. When an organism is removed from a food chain, it can affect all other organisms in the chain.
But food chains are not just about who eats whom. They are also intrinsically linked to the concepts of habitat and ecological niche. The habitat is the place where an organism lives, while the ecological niche is the role that organism plays in the ecosystem. For example, a lion lives in the savanna (habitat) and plays the role of a predator, hunting other animals for food (ecological niche).
Now, you must be wondering, why is it important to learn about food chains? Well, understanding food chains is fundamental for the conservation and management of ecosystems. It is through the study of food chains that we can understand how human activities, such as overhunting or habitat destruction, can affect ecosystems and, in turn, our own survival.
Therefore, in this project, we will delve deeper into the world of food chains, investigating different ecosystems and the roles of organisms within them. Additionally, we will also learn about the importance of conserving ecosystems and how small actions can make a big difference.
Practical Activity
Activity Title: "The Energy Journey: Unraveling Food Chains"
Project Objective
This project aims to enhance students' understanding of the concept of food chains and their importance in ecosystems. Additionally, the activity aims to develop students' research, communication, problem-solving, creative thinking, and time management skills.
Detailed Project Description
In this activity, students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5. Each group should choose an ecosystem of their preference (such as a forest, a lake, a desert, etc.). They will then investigate the food chain in this chosen ecosystem, identifying the producers, consumers (primary, secondary, tertiary), and decomposers present.
After the research, students will create a "Food Chain Map" of the chosen ecosystem, visually demonstrating the relationships between different organisms and their positions in the food chain. They can use images, drawings, and words to represent each trophic level.
Finally, each group will present their map in the classroom and explain what they have learned about the food chain. They should also discuss the importance of conserving the ecosystem they chose and how human actions can affect the food chain and ecosystem balance.

- Large paper or cardboard for map creation
