Hello there, budding scientists! Have you ever marveled at the incredible systems found in nature? Many bacteria are helpful and aid us with things like digesting our food. They're also superstars when it comes to breaking down organic matter since they can munch on almost anything!

Why is Decay So Important?

Now, you might be wondering, why is decay such a big deal? Well, decay isn't just nature's way of getting rid of organic waste. It's also crucial for recycling nutrients!

When organic matter decays, it breaks down into simpler things like water, carbon dioxide, and minerals. Plants can then soak up these substances and use them to grow. And when animals eat the plants, those nutrients get passed on to them. So, without decay, we wouldn't have healthy plants and, in turn, not enough food for everyone.

Detailed Step-by-Step Instructions for the Activity

  1. Form Groups: Divide students into groups of 3 to 5.

  2. Waste Preparation: Each group should collect one fruit peel, one piece of bread, and one tree leaf. Place each of these items into a clear plastic bag and seal it tightly.
