Accentuation of Paroxytones

Context

Hello, everyone! Are you ready to embark on a fun and challenging journey through the world of accentuation of paroxytones? In this project, we will explore this essential concept of the Portuguese language that helps us understand how words are accented and why.

The first thing we need to understand is what a paroxytone is. Do you know when we say a word and have the impression that the strongest syllable is the penultimate one? For example, in "cama" (bed), "porta" (door), "cadeira" (chair), and "livro" (book), the penultimate syllable is stronger. These words are called paroxytones. On the other hand, words like "papel" (paper), "amor" (love), "amigo" (friend), and "feliz" (happy), where the last syllable is the strongest, are called oxytones.

Now, why are we talking so much about paroxytones? The answer is simple: the accentuation of paroxytones is very important in our language. It helps us differentiate the meaning of many words. For example, the word "pára" (from the verb "parar" - to stop) has an accent, while the word "para" (preposition - for) does not. This happens because the first one is a paroxytone, and the second one is an oxytone.

Introduction

The accentuation of paroxytones is a rule that helps us understand how to correctly accentuate words, that is, to put accents where necessary. This rule is very important because it helps avoid confusion and misunderstandings in our communication.

But how do we know when a paroxytone should be accented? For that, we need to know the accentuation rules. There are several rules, but I will present some of the most important ones to you:

  1. Acute Accent: It is used on paroxytones ending in "a", "e", "o", followed or not by "s". Examples: música (music), táxi (taxi), fácil (easy), órgão (organ).

  2. Circumflex Accent: It is used on paroxytones with tonic "i" and "u", followed or not by "s", when preceded by a vowel, and also on paroxytones ending in "l" or "r", when there is a diphthong in the previous syllable. Examples: íntimo (intimate), vôo (flight), pôr (to put), fôrma (mold).

  3. Differential Accent: It is used to differentiate words that have the same pronunciation but different meanings. Examples: pára/para (stop/for), pêlo/pelo (hair/by the).

Now that we have reviewed a bit about paroxytones and accentuation, we can move on to the next section, where we will discover what our challenge will be!

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Unraveling the Accentuation of Paroxytones"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to provide students with a deeper understanding of the accentuation of paroxytones and its rules. Additionally, it aims to foster teamwork, creativity, time management, and students' communication skills.

Detailed Project Description

In this project, each group of students will be responsible for creating an illustrated book whose central theme will be the accentuation of paroxytones. Each page of the book should represent an accentuation rule, with examples and an illustration created by the students themselves. The groups will also need to create a board game on the theme, which will be used to present the book to the class.

Required Materials

  • Cardboards or cardboard for the book pages
  • Colored pencils, markers, crayons
  • Blunt scissors
  • Glue
  • Old magazines for cutting out illustrations
  • Die
  • Pawns (can be buttons, bottle caps, etc.)
  • Ruler
  • Bond paper
  • Printer (to print written rules, if necessary)

Step by Step

  1. Group Formation: Form groups of 3 to 5 students. Each group will be a team of "researchers" who will become experts in the accentuation of paroxytones.

  2. Study of the Rules: Each group should study the accentuation rules of paroxytones with the help of textbooks, dictionaries, and/or online materials.

  3. Creation of the Illustrated Book: The students, together, should plan and create the illustrated book. Each page of the book should represent an accentuation rule, with examples and illustrations. It is important that all students in the group actively participate in the creation of the book.

  4. Creation of the Board Game: While some students in the group work on the book, others should create the board game. The game should have squares representing the accentuation rules and challenges that players must complete to advance on the board. Creativity is very welcome at this stage!

  5. Finalization of the Book and Game: After creating the book and the game, students should review all the material, ensuring that the accentuation rules are clear and that the game functions correctly.

  6. Project Presentation: Finally, the groups will present the book and the game to the class. Each student should participate in the presentation, explaining one of the accentuation rules and how it was represented in the book and the game.

By the end of the project, students will have a deeper understanding of the accentuation of paroxytones and will have developed important skills such as teamwork, time management, creativity, and communication. So, let's get started? Let's go, young linguists!
