Introduction

Dance is one of the oldest forms of human expression, used for many purposes throughout history, whether to tell stories, express feelings, celebrate religious rituals, or simply for fun. It is considered one of the seven main arts, being a universal language that is perceptible through the movement of the human body. Not to mention the various dance styles that exist, each with its own peculiarities, from classical ballet to street dance, for example.

Every dance movement involves a series of structural and dynamic elements, such as rhythm, space, direction, duration, and intensity, which are used in different ways in each style. In addition, dance is rich in symbolism and abstraction, allowing us to interpret the emotions and ideas that the dancer wants to express or the context in which the dance was created.

Throughout the project, we will delve into this universe, exploring theoretical concepts and the practice of dance, getting to know some styles and their characteristics, and experiencing dance as a form of expression and connection with our own body and with others.

Contextualization

Dance is an art that is present in all human cultures and in various contexts, from ceremonies and festivities to art shows and sports competitions. It plays an important role in society and education, being a means of communication, a vehicle for cultural expression, and a way to promote physical activity and well-being.

Furthermore, dance brings many benefits both to the body and mind. It helps develop motor skills, balance, and physical strength. From an emotional and social point of view, dancing can promote self-esteem, confidence, creativity, and collaboration skills, as well as being a playful and fun way to learn and express oneself.

In this sense, dance is much more than a physical activity. It is a practice of self-awareness, expression, and social interaction that can teach us many things and bring us many benefits.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Dancing Across the World"

Project Objective

Explore various forms of dance around the world, understanding their sociocultural, historical, and artistic contexts. In addition, students will have the opportunity to experience and appreciate the different manifestations of dance, cultivating their perception, imagination, ability to symbolize, and bodily repertoire.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members and will be tasked with researching, creating a presentation, and a performance about a style of dance from a specific culture. This project involves the disciplines of Arts and History/Sociology, requiring research on the origin and evolution of the selected dances, as well as their meanings and symbolism in the original culture, complemented by the practice of dance.

The project will be developed in phases, each focusing on a specific aspect, allowing students to delve into the concepts, practices, and reflections on dance as a form of art, cultural expression, and social interaction.

Necessary Materials

• Computer with internet access for research and slide preparation;
• Materials for creating posters or other forms of visual presentation, if preferred by the students;
• Adequate space for students to practice the dance movements;
• Appropriate clothing and materials for the performance, depending on the chosen dance style.

Step by Step

1. The first phase will involve research on dance styles from different cultures around the world. Each group will need to choose a specific style or dance for the focus of their project. In this phase, students need to research the history, origin, meaning, characteristic movements, and music associated with the chosen dance style.

2. After the research, students should organize the information visually, either through a slide presentation, a panel, poster, etc., containing the main information and illustrative images.

3. The third phase involves the practice of dance. Based on the research, students will need to learn and practice the movements of the chosen dance. It is recommended to record a video of the performance, which will be presented along with the visual presentation.

4. Finally, all groups must write a report on the project, which should include the following topics:

• Introduction: The group should contextualize the chosen dance style, its relevance and application in the real world, and the objective of this project.
• Development: The group should explain the theory behind the chosen dance style, describe the activity in detail, indicate the methodology used, and finally present and discuss the results obtained.
• Conclusion: The group should conclude the work by summarizing its main points, explaining the lessons learned, and drawing conclusions about the project.
• Bibliography: The group should indicate the sources they relied on to work on the project such as books, web pages, videos, etc.

The project should last approximately two weeks to allow students enough time to conduct their research, practice the dance, and write the report.

The final project deliverables will be the visual presentation, the dance performance (live or on video), and the written report. All components are equally important and complement each other, providing a comprehensive and rich look at dance as an artistic and cultural manifestation.
