Contextualization
Writing is one of the four essential skills we need when learning a new language, along with reading, listening, and speaking. Writing is more than just putting words and sentences together. It is about being able to express our thoughts, ideas, and opinions in a clear and coherent way. This skill becomes even more important when writing in a second language, as it is the case of English for us, Brazilians.
Being able to write well in English is not only beneficial for academic purposes, but it is also highly valued in the job market. Knowing how to express yourself properly in English can open doors to jobs and career opportunities in multinational companies, for instance. Moreover, we live in a globalized society where English is often used as a common language for communication between people who speak different mother tongues. Therefore, writing proficiency in English is more than a luxury, it is a necessity.
In the school environment, writing in English is often focused on grammar and spelling, however, creative writing and the expression of ideas are aspects that should also be emphasized. Writing is not only about rules, but also about having the freedom to express our ideas and emotions. In this project, we will look beyond the grammatical structures and focus more on writing as a skill of communication and expression.
Introduction
The project "Basic Text Writing" in English was created to provide you, Elementary School students, the opportunity to practice and improve your writing skills in English. Through fun and engaging activities, you will work in groups to create different forms of texts in English, from short stories to letters and diaries.
Writing in English, or in any language, involves a series of cognitive processes. You have to think about what you want to say, how you want to say it, and how the words should be written and organized to best convey your message. This project will help you develop and enhance all these skills, while having fun and learning together.
This project also aims to promote collaboration and teamwork. Writing is often seen as an individual activity, but there is a lot to gain from sharing and discussing ideas with others. This project will provide opportunities for you to work together, supporting and learning from each other in the writing process.
Practical Activity
Activity Title:" Multidisciplinary Literary Journey in English"
Project Aim
The main aim of this project is to improve the students' writing skills in English through the production of different types of texts. In addition, it aims to stimulate teamwork, creativity, and autonomous research. It also becomes a tool to integrate other disciplines, such as History and Geography, in the learning of the English language.
Detailed Project Description
In this project, each group of 3 to 5 students will embark on a "Literary Journey", in which each stage requires the production of a specific type of text in English. Each text must be connected to the chosen complementary discipline: History or Geography.
The project is expected to last at least 3 weeks, with each stage of the journey happening in one week.
Materials Required
- Paper and pens;
- Access to the internet for research;
- English dictionaries if possible;
- Books and resources from the school library.
Step-by-step to Carry Out the Activity
-
1st Week - Historical Short Story: Each group should select a significant historical event and write a short story in English based on that event. The short story should be between 500 to 1000 words long.
-
2nd Week - Geographical Travel Diary: The group should choose a specific country and imagine a trip to that country. They should then write diary entries in English describing their imaginary trip, highlighting the country's geography, its cultural traditions, and its points of interest.
-
3rd Week - Future Letters: Each member of the group should write a letter to themselves in the future (5 to 10 years from now) in English. In this letter, they should reflect on what they have learned from History and Geography during the carrying out of the project, express their hopes and expectations for the future, and how they could apply their English language learning in it.
After completing each stage of the Literary Journey, the group should get together to revise the texts and refine their writing. Each member should play the role of editor at least once during the project.
Project Deliverables
At the end of the project, each group should hand in a compilation of all the texts written during the Literary Journey. Each text should be accompanied by a short summary explaining the chosen theme and how it relates to the complementary discipline.
In addition, the group should present a detailed report of the Literary Journey. This report should include the following topics:
-
Introduction: In this section, the students should introduce their group, describe the goal of the Literary Journey, and explain the relevance of writing in English and of the complementary disciplines in real life.
-
Development: Here, the students should explain in detail each stage of the Literary Journey, the methodology used (how the research was conducted, how the ideas were developed, how the revision of the texts was carried out), and discuss the results obtained (qualities and challenges of writing in English, learning in the complementary discipline).
-
Conclusion: The students should recap the main points of the project, highlight the learnings obtained during the Literary Journey, and conclude about the importance of writing in English and of the complementary disciplines in their education.
-
Bibliography: In this topic, the students should list all the resources they used to carry out the project, such as books, websites, and videos.
