Transportation is a key element in the development of societies, allowing the connection between distant places and contributing to the economy, culture, and leisure. There is an immense diversity of means of transportation that adapt to different needs, terrains, and distances to be traveled. From the simplest means such as walking or cycling, to the most complex such as airplanes and ships. Large cities, in particular, rely heavily on transportation to function efficiently. Therefore, it is worth studying the different types of transportation and how they affect people's lives.

Communication is also fundamental for the functioning of a society. With technological evolution, communication means have diversified and become increasingly efficient. Communication between distant people became possible with the emergence of the telephone, the internet, email, instant messaging, etc. These means of communication play an important role in disseminating information, education, work, and entertainment.

Introduction

In this project, we will explore the means of transportation and communication and how they influence our lives and our environment. We will learn about the different types of transportation, their importance for the economy and for people's mobility, and also about the problems and challenges faced, especially in large urban centers.

In the communication part, we will understand how this area has evolved over time, its importance for the functioning of society, and how technological advances have transformed the way we communicate.

The internet will be our main source of research, but we can also resort to books, documentaries, interviews with professionals in the field, and visits to places related to transportation and communication in our city.

Practical Activity: 'Building Connected Cities'

Project Objective

To explore in a practical and playful way the concepts of means of transportation and communication. For this, students will plan and create a model of a city, considering the different forms of transportation and communication available.

Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 participants and will have one month to complete the project. Each group will be responsible for creating a model representing a city.

They should consider:

• The diversity of means of transportation (land, water, and air) and their role in the city's structure.
• Communication facilities (antennas, telecommunication towers, underground cables) and how they integrate into the urban landscape.
• The interaction between the city and the countryside and the role of transportation in this relationship.
• Public transportation and its challenges in large cities.

Required Materials

• Drawing and painting materials (pencils, colored pens, crayons, brushes, and paints)
• Cardboard, cardstock, toothpicks, bottle caps, toilet paper rolls
• Modeling clay
• Glue, scissors
• Other recyclable materials

Step by Step

1. Planning: Discuss how the city areas will be, which means of transportation and communication will be included, and how they will integrate into the city. Make sketches and lists to organize ideas.
2. Model Construction: Based on the planning, start building the model. Use the materials available to represent the different elements of the city.
3. Presentation: Make an oral presentation of the model, explaining what each element represents, how the means of transportation and communication were incorporated, and what challenges were considered in the city's construction.

Project Delivery

• Model: The model must be presented in the classroom, showing in detail each part built and explaining the concepts addressed.

• Written Document: In addition to the model, each group must prepare a report following the format: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, Bibliography.

  • Introduction: Provide context for the project, its relevance, and real-world application. Explain the objective of this work.
  • Development: Explain the theory behind the central concepts of the project (means of transportation and communication), detail the activity, indicate the methodology used, and present the results obtained.
  • Conclusions: Summarize the main points of the project, the learnings obtained, and the conclusions about the activity.
  • Bibliography: Indicate the sources used to support the project.

Evaluation criteria will include not only the quality and originality of the model and report but also the collaboration and teamwork demonstrated during the process.
