Context

In this project, we will explore the fascinating world of energy matrixes. The energy matrix is the combination of all energy sources used by a country or region. There are several energy sources, such as solar, wind, hydroelectric, nuclear and fossil fuels such as oil and coal. Each source has its advantages and disadvantages, environmental impacts and socioeconomic implications.

Energy matrixes are of paramount importance. They power our homes, cities, industries and vehicles. In addition, the way they are managed has direct implications on our environment and economy. Switching to renewable energy sources, for example, is one of the major challenges of our time, with significant impacts on global warming and the sustainability of our planet.

Importance of Energy Matrixes

Living in a modern world implies having energy available at all times. From the light that illuminates our night to the cell phone we use to communicate, energy is a dominant factor in our daily lives. However, we do not always stop to think about where this energy comes from, how it is produced and what the impacts of this production are.

Understanding energy matrixes is essential to understanding how our daily activities impact the environment and what actions can be taken to minimize this impact. In addition, the energy issue is also central to global geopolitics, impacting international relations and the economy.

Hands-on Activity: "Building the Energy Future"

Project objective

The objective of this hands-on activity is to develop students' understanding of the different energy matrixes, their advantages, disadvantages and socio-environmental implications. Students will research different energy sources and then "build" their own energy city using recyclable materials.

Detailed description of the project

In this activity, groups of 3 to 5 students should first conduct research on different energy sources - including renewable and non-renewable. They should delve into at least three energy sources, understanding how they work, their advantages and disadvantages, as well as the impacts these energy sources can have on the environment and society.

After the research is complete, the groups must draw a "plan" of an imaginary city, drawing it on a large sheet of cardboard or brown paper. This plan should contain the location of the various energy sources they researched, illustrating the spaces where each one would be most appropriate.

Next, using recyclable materials - such as cardboard boxes, paper tubes, bottle caps, among others - the groups will build miniature models of the energy installations studied and position them in their city according to the planning previously carried out. The group should create explanatory captions for each energy source in the model and also a caption for the city as a whole.

The activity should have a total duration of around 5 to 10 hours per student and the project deadline is one month.

Necessary materials

  • Research materials (books, internet access etc.).
  • Cardboard or brown paper.
  • Recyclable materials (cardboard boxes, paper tubes, bottle caps etc.).
  • Pens, pencils, markers.
  • Blunt scissors.
  • Glue.

Step by step

  1. Conduct research on different energy sources.
  2. Write an explanatory text for each energy source studied.
  3. Plan the imaginary city, drawing it on cardboard or brown paper.
  4. Collect the recyclable materials.
  5. Build the miniature models of the energy installations.
  6. Position the facilities in the city according to the planning.
  7. Create explanatory captions for each facility and for the city as a whole.
  8. Finalize the project by reviewing the content and visual presentation.

Project delivery

Upon completion of the model, the group should write a report detailing the project process and the research carried out. This report should contain an Introduction (with the context of the project, and the objectives), Development (with the theory on energy matrixes, the detailed description of the activities developed and the results obtained), Conclusions (with the main learnings and conclusions of the project) and Bibliography (with the bibliographical references used in the research).

The report will complement the hands-on activity, allowing students to express their theoretical understanding of the subject and reflect on which socio-emotional skills were necessary to carry out the project. The combination of the report and the energy city model will be the final result of the project, demonstrating both the knowledge acquired and the students' ability to apply this knowledge creatively and collaboratively.
