Energy is a fundamental concept for our daily lives. It is present in everything we do, from the light that illuminates our homes to the food we eat. Without energy, the world as we know it would not be possible. But have you ever stopped to think where all this energy we use comes from?

Introduction

Energy can be found in various forms. For example, sunlight is a form of energy, as well as the heat we feel. The electricity we use, in turn, is another form of energy. These different forms of energy are generated by various sources. Some of them are renewable, which means they do not run out, such as solar light and wind. Others are non-renewable, meaning they will eventually run out, such as oil and coal.

Now, you must be wondering: what does this have to do with geography? Well, the geographical location of a place plays an important role in how energy is generated and used. For example, countries with many rivers can generate a large part of their electricity from hydroelectric power. Regions with a lot of sun can invest in solar energy. Understanding these relationships is essential for us to think about innovative solutions for our energy demand.

Innovation, in turn, is the key to finding new ways of energy and using it more efficiently and sustainably. In a world increasingly dependent on energy, it is essential to think of ways to generate it cleanly and renewably. Innovation also helps us understand the challenges and opportunities that energy brings to different regions of the world.

In this project, you will have the opportunity to explore these concepts in more depth, proposing innovative solutions to the energy challenge we face. Practical Activity

Activity Title: "EcoCity: Energy of the Future"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to stimulate students' creativity and innovative thinking in solving problems related to renewable energies and their geographical location. Additionally, it aims to promote teamwork, communication, and time management skills.

Project Description

Student teams will be challenged to create a 3D model of a city, called "EcoCity," powered by different forms of renewable energy. Each team will have to research, plan, design, and build a model that demonstrates the use of at least three different forms of renewable energy (solar, wind, hydroelectric, biomass, among others) in the city.

Students will also need to explain, in a written report, the geographical characteristics of the region that make the use of these forms of energy possible, as well as the benefits and challenges of each type of energy used in the city.

Required Materials

  • Cardboard, boxes, styrofoam, or any recyclable material to build the city model
  • Paints, colored pens, colored pencils for model decoration
  • Materials for creating energy sources (e.g., wooden sticks for wind energy, aluminum foil for solar energy)
  • Computers with internet access for research
  • Textbooks or printed materials on energy and geography

Step by Step

  1. Team Formation - Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members. Each team will have a name and will be responsible for a part of the city.

  2. Research and Planning - Each team must research the different forms of renewable energy and their characteristics, as well as the geography of the region they chose for their part of the city. Based on this, they should plan the layout of their region.

  3. Model Construction - Using recyclable materials, teams must build the model of their part of the city. In this model, they should include the buildings, the renewable energy sources, and the geographical characteristics that influence energy generation.

  4. Report Elaboration - Each team must write a report explaining the choices made in the city planning, the energy sources used, and the geographical characteristics of the region. The report should be clear and well-organized.

  5. Presentation - At the end of the project, each team will present their city model to the class, explaining the choices made and the lessons learned during the process. The written report will also be submitted to the teacher for evaluation.
