Throughout human history, cities have been developed as spaces of concentration of populations, economic, and cultural activities. Understanding the growth of cities is fundamental to understanding the social, economic, and cultural development of a society.

Urban growth is a complex geographical phenomenon that incorporates a variety of factors, such as economy, culture, politics, technology, and the environment. It can be analyzed from different perspectives, considering, for example, the spatial dimension (such as the physical development of cities), the demographic dimension (such as the growth of the urban population), the economic dimension (such as the economic transformation associated with urbanism), and the social dimension (such as the social, cultural, political, and environmental change associated with the growth of cities).

The concept of a city and the urbanization process are widely studied in geography because cities are spaces where human societies develop and interact. The growth of cities, therefore, is not only a physical or demographic phenomenon but also a social, cultural, and economic phenomenon.

Cities are fundamental to human development. They provide a wide range of opportunities and benefits, such as jobs, education, health, culture, among others. However, the rapid and disorderly growth of cities can lead to several problems, such as social inequality, urban poverty, environmental degradation, and other socioeconomic problems.

Urban growth also has a significant impact on the environment. For example, cities consume a large amount of natural resources and produce a large amount of waste, thus contributing to environmental degradation and climate change.

Practical Activity: "Growing Cities"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to allow students to understand the growth and development of cities, analyzing the social, economic, and environmental changes that occur as a result.

Project Description

In the "Growing Cities" project, student groups will be asked to choose a Brazilian city and investigate its growth and development over time. To do so, they will need to collect demographic, economic, and socio-environmental data, analyze this data, and finally present their findings through a presentation and a report.

Materials Required

Students will need a computer with internet access to research information and data about the chosen city. In addition, they will use paper, pencils, and pens to make notes and draw maps and graphs.

Step by Step

Step 1: Form groups of 3 to 5 students and choose the city to be studied.

Step 2: Research and collect data on the growth of the chosen city over time. The data may include (but is not limited to) information on population, infrastructure, economy, environment, and culture.

Step 3: Analysis of the collected data. Students should make comparisons, identify trends, and observe changes and continuities over time.

Step 4: Preparation of a presentation and a report on the findings. The report should include the following elements: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography.

Step 5: Presentation of the work to the class. Each group will have the opportunity to present their findings and receive feedback from their classmates and the teacher.

Project Deliverables

The project will be completed with an oral presentation and the submission of a written report. Specific details about each element are:

Oral Presentation: The presentation should be approximately 15 minutes long and include an overview of the growth of the chosen city, the socioeconomic and environmental changes that occurred as a result, and any conclusions or insights that the group obtained.

Written Report:

• Introduction: Students should contextualize the chosen city, explaining its importance and the reason for the choice, in addition to presenting the project's objective.

• Development: Here, students will discuss the methodology used to collect and analyze the data, detailing all the information collected and how it relates to the growth of the city.

• Conclusions: Students should review the most important points of the report, highlight what were the main changes observed and what the possible causes of these changes are.

• Bibliography: Indication of the sources that were used to work on the project, such as books, research websites, videos, among others.

This activity will allow students to develop research, teamwork, and communication skills, in addition to deepening their knowledge about the growth and development of cities.
