Hands-on Activity: "My City, My Future"

Project Objective

The goal of this project is for students, working in groups of 3 to 5, to research and understand the concept of urbanization and urban growth. Groups will investigate how their city developed over time, the challenges it faced along the way, and how these challenges were overcome. Finally, each group will present their findings in a creative and visually engaging way.

Detailed Project Description

Each group will choose a city (it can be the city in which they live or any city of their choice) and using books, encyclopedias, the internet, interviews with older adults, maps, old photos, and any other resources available, will research and answer the following questions:

1. What was the city like in the past? Students should investigate what the city was like when it was first founded, how many people lived there, what the main economic activities were, what the infrastructure was like (streets, houses, schools, hospitals, etc.), and any other information they find relevant.

2. How has the city changed over time? Students should research how the city has changed over the years, how many people live there now, what the current infrastructure is like, what the main economic activities are, and any other changes they find significant.

3. What challenges did the city face as it grew? Students should investigate what challenges the city faced as it grew, how the city dealt with these challenges, and whether they were overcome.

4. How can the city improve in the future? Finally, students should consider how the city can improve in the future, what challenges it still faces, and what actions can be taken to address these challenges.
