Practical Activity: "Our Mapped Adventure"

Project Objective:

Students will create an interactive map showing the points of interest in their school community. They will work in groups, applying concepts of orientation, reading, and interpreting maps.

Project Description:

Each group of students will be responsible for creating a "Map of Our Mapped Adventure". This map should include the school's location, nearby landmarks, and places of interest in the community where the school is located. In addition, the map should contain detailed information about each location, such as what can be found there and why it is an interesting place to visit.

Necessary Materials:

• Large paper or cardboard to draw the map
• Pencils, colored pens, ruler, and eraser
• Magazines, newspapers, internet printouts (to cut and paste images on points of interest, if desired)
• Scissors and glue
• Compass (if not available, students can use cell phone apps that simulate compasses)

Step by Step:

Step 1:

Form groups of 3 to 5 students. Each group will be a team of "Adventurous Cartographers".

Step 2:

Discuss together: what are the interesting places near the school? It could be a park, a candy store, a soccer field, a community center, etc. Make a list with at least 5 of these locations.

Step 3:

Now, each team should go on a "Recognition Adventure"! Visit each of the locations on the list and observe the path you take to reach each one. Pay attention to landmarks, such as buildings, trees, signs, etc.

Back in the classroom, take the large paper or cardboard and, using pencils and ruler, start drawing the map. Remember to include the school and all the interesting locations you visited. Use the compass (or cell phone app) to help you define the correct direction.
