Introduction

The formation of the first cities was a major milestone in human history. It occurred in different parts of the world, and each of these cities had its own characteristics and stories. For example, one of the oldest cities we know is Jericho, located in Palestine. It was founded around 9000 B.C. and had a wall to protect itself from enemies. Another ancient city is Çatal Hüyük, in Turkey, founded around 7000 B.C., and was an important trading center.

The birth of cities is directly related to the development of agriculture. In the past, humans were nomadic, meaning they constantly moved in search of food. However, about 10,000 years ago, they discovered agriculture, which allowed them to cultivate their own food. With agriculture, people began to live in a fixed location, leading to the emergence of the first cities.

When people started living together in a fixed location, they needed to create rules and institutions to organize coexistence. Thus, the first governments, laws, and writing systems emerged. Cities became centers of culture and knowledge, where people could learn from each other and develop new ideas and technologies.

In this project, you, little historians, will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 students. Each group will be responsible for researching and presenting about an ancient city in the world. You will discover what life was like in these cities, what their main characteristics were, and how they contributed to the development of humanity.

• Internet access (if possible)
• Paper and pencil for notes
• Materials for the presentation (cardboard, colored pens, glue, scissors, etc.)
