In history, memory markers are essential for us to understand and study the past. They allow us to piece together times and events that otherwise might be forgotten. For example, have you ever heard of historical monuments, such as the Great Wall of China, the Pyramids of Egypt or Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro? These are all amazing wonders of the world that act as memory markers for humankind, helping us remember past times and cultures.

However, memory is not static, it is something that is always changing and reforming. Just like us, it is influenced by our experiences and the context in which we live. Because of this, memory markers can also change over time or even disappear. For example, just imagine what it would be like if we no longer had access to photographs or the internet to help us remember important moments? It certainly would have a big impact on how we remember and study the past.

Now that we understand what memory markers are and how they work, let's explore a little more about their importance in history. Memory markers are like puzzle pieces that help us put together the picture of a past time or event. They give us valuable clues about the lives of people, their beliefs, their challenges and their achievements.

For example, if we want to know more about the Middle Ages, we can look at the castles, the cathedrals, the paintings and the stories from that period. Every single one of these things is a memory marker that helps us understand a little bit more about that time. In the same way, if we want to know more about the Cold War, we can look at the monuments, the films, the music and the stories from that period. Each of these items is a memory marker that helps us understand a little bit more about the complexity of that historical event.

Getting Practical

Activity Title: "Our Memory Markers"

Project Aim

The aim of this project is for students to learn, in a fun and practical way, about the importance of memory markers in history and in personal lives. Through the creation of their own memory markers, they will develop skills such as collaboration, time management, problem solving and communication.

Detailed Project Description

In this activity, students will be divided into groups of 3-5 people. Each group will create a "Memory Museum" that represents a period of history or a significant event of their choice.

Inside their Memory Museum, students will present different types of memory markers, such as photographs, objects, drawings, texts etc., that they will create themselves. Each memory marker should have a written description explaining what it is and why it is significant.

As well as this, the groups will be responsible for coming up with a short drama or song performance that represents the time period or event that they have chosen.

Materials Required

• Cardboard or large paper for the construction of the Memory Museum
• Colouring pencils, felt tips, crayons, paints etc.
• Paper and pens for creating the memory marker descriptions
• Miscellaneous materials for the creation of the memory markers (photos, magazines, recyclables etc.)
• Musical instruments (if available) for the song performance
• Costumes and props for the drama performance

The Process

1. Choosing a Time Period or Event: The group should come together and decide which period of history or which event they would like their Memory Museum to represent.

2. Planning: Once they have chosen, the group should come up with a detailed plan of how they will create their memory markers and drama or song performance. Each member of the group should have a specific task that they are responsible for.

3. Creating the Memory Markers: Using the materials provided, the group should create their memory markers. It is important that each memory marker has a written description explaining what it is and why it is significant.

4. Constructing the Memory Museum: Using the cardboard or large paper, the group should construct their Memory Museum. Remember that the museum should have a space for each memory marker and a performance area for the drama or song.

5. Rehearsing and Preparing Performances: The group should rehearse their drama or song performance, making sure that everyone is comfortable with their parts.

6. Project Presentation: Once the Memory Museums are complete and the performances are prepared, each group will present their project to the class.

Submission Format: The Memory Museum and written memory marker descriptions should be submitted as the final deliverable. Students will also discuss what they have learnt from the activity and how their own ideas may have changed or developed during the process.
