History is the science that studies the changes and continuities that have occurred over time. It is the area of human knowledge that is most interested in time and its passage, as it allows us to understand the processes of transformation and continuity in various aspects of human life (social, political, economic, cultural, among others). Therefore, the analysis of time is essential for the study of history.

Calendars are human ways of organizing the passage of time. We all use calendars to measure and organize time, and they have been a fundamental part of human civilization since ancient times. However, each society has developed its own way of marking the passage of time, according to its needs and perceptions of the world.

Importance of the Theme

Understanding the concept of time and how it influences history is essential to comprehend how societies and cultures evolve. The passage of time is not simply a count of days, months, and years, but a complex entity that affects all aspects of human life. Learning Objective

This activity aims to have students explore and understand how different cultures and societies throughout history defined and understood time and how this influenced their lives and decisions.

Activity Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people. Each group will select a different society (for example, the Egyptians, the Mayans, the Greeks, the Brazilian indigenous peoples, etc.) and study how this society understood and marked the passage of time and how this understanding influenced its history.

Required Materials

• Internet access for research;
• History books/library;
• Paper, pencils, and markers for creating posters;
• Material for video recording: cell phone or camera.

Activity Steps

1. Group division and selection of the society to be researched.
2. Theoretical research: Students should research how this society understood time, what type of calendar (if any) they used, what temporal milestones they considered relevant, etc.
3. Connection with the society's life: Students must research how this understanding of time influenced the life of this society (rituals, agriculture, social organization, etc.).
4. Creation of a poster: Based on the studies conducted, each group must create an illustrative poster that tells the “story of time” of the chosen society.
5. Video recording: Students should record a short video (2-3 minutes) presenting their poster and sharing what they learned about how the passage of time was understood by their society and how it affected its history.

Project Deliverables

Students must deliver the created poster and the recorded video. Additionally, they must submit a written report that answers the following questions:

• Introduction: Which society was studied and why was it chosen? What is the relevance of understanding how this society perceived the passage of time?
• Development: How did this society understand and mark the passage of time? What sources were used for the research? How did this time marking influence the life of this society?
• Conclusion: What have we learned from this study? How does this understanding of time fit in or contrast with ours? What connections can we make between the passage of time in the society studied and our own?
• Bibliography: List the sources used in the research.

This practical activity connects with theory by asking students to apply their knowledge of the passage of time in researching a specific society. The written report allows students to practice academic writing, combining their practical findings with theory and analysis.

Students will have one week to complete the project, including research, poster and video creation, and report writing.
