Hello, everyone! We're about to set off on a super exciting mathematical adventure! Get ready to discover the fascinating world of Area and Perimeter. No, we're not talking about a new amusement park, but something seriously cool - shapes!

Have you ever stopped to think about all the different shapes we see all around us every day? From a simple sheet of paper to a construction toy, everything is made up of different shapes. And what makes each of these shapes unique are two very special features: Area and Perimeter.

The Area of a shape is the measurement of the space inside it. The Perimeter is the distance around the edge of a shape. For example, when we draw a square, we can measure the Area by counting how many smaller squares will fit inside it, and we can measure the Perimeter by adding up the lengths of all four sides.

Getting Started

So, are you ready to learn, once and for all, how to calculate the Area and Perimeter of different shapes? The first thing we need to know is that every shape has a special formula to calculate its Area and Perimeter.

For example, for a square, the Area is calculated by multiplying the length of one side by itself, and the Perimeter is four times the length of one side. And for a rectangle, the Area is calculated by multiplying the length by the width, and the Perimeter is found by adding up the lengths of all four sides.

Now, you might be wondering, "but why is it important to know about the Area and Perimeter of shapes?" Well, that's a great question! Knowing how to calculate Area and Perimeter helps us to better understand the world around us. Plus, these concepts are super useful in all sorts of everyday situations, like when we're planning a party and need to figure out how many metres of fabric we need to cover the tables.

Hands-on Activity: "Building the Perfect City"

Project Goal

The goal of this project is to give students the chance to practise and better understand the concepts of Area and Perimeter, as well as to develop social and emotional skills such as teamwork, creative thinking, problem-solving, time management, and communication.

Project Description

In this activity, students will work in teams to create a "Perfect City" on a large piece of cardboard. The city must be made up of different geometric shapes: squares, rectangles, and circles. Each shape will have a specific Area and Perimeter value, which the students will calculate. Plus, the teams will have to create stories involving the buildings and the people of the city, encouraging creativity and writing skills.

Materials

  • Large piece of cardboard (or brown paper)
  • Ruler
  • Pencils
  • Eraser
  • Compass
  • Safety scissors
  • Glue
  • Magazines (to cut out pictures)

Step-by-Step

  1. Students will be divided into teams of 3 to 5 people.
  2. Each team will receive a large piece of cardboard and the materials to draw and cut out shapes.
  3. Students must plan and draw their "Perfect City" on the paper. They can create buildings, streets, parks, lakes, whatever their imaginations allow! Each building must be a different geometric shape (square, rectangle, or circle).
  4. After drawing their city, students must use the ruler to measure the sides of each building and the radius of each circle. Using these measurements, they will calculate the Area and Perimeter of each building.
  5. Students must write down the measurements, Area, and Perimeter of each building on a separate piece of paper.
  6. Now comes the fun part! Each team will have to create a story about the city they have drawn. They can imagine who lives in the buildings, what the most fun places in the city are, and so on. The story can be written, drawn, or even acted out as a play.
  7. Finally, the teams will present their cities and their stories to the class. They should explain how they calculated the Area and Perimeter and talk a little bit about what they learned from the project.

Submission

The project will be submitted in two formats: the cardboard with the "Perfect City" and the story, which can be a presentation, a play, or a written piece. In addition, students must submit the piece of paper with the measurements, Area, and Perimeter of each building.
