Introduction

From our house's land to the living-room carpet, these concepts are present and help us understand the world around us better.

To begin, let's understand what the Area is. The area of a figure is the amount of space that it occupies on a flat surface. In other words, it is as if it were the “filling” of a shape. The Perimeter, in its turn, is the outline of a figure, the line that delimits an object. It is the sum of all the sides of a figure.

Contextualization

Now, let us think about some situations in our daily lives where the area and perimeter are very important. When you help your mom set the table for lunch, for instance, you are dealing with these concepts. Have you ever noticed that the tablecloth covers the entire surface of the furniture? This is the area! And if you measure the table's length and width, you will be calculating the perimeter.

Another very common situation is when we go to the supermarket. Have you ever stopped to think that the shelves are all rectangular? That's right, and by calculating the shelf's area, we can understand how many products it can hold. What about the perimeter? It helps us ensure that we are not going to collide with the shelf when we are walking through the aisles.

These are just a few examples, but the area and perimeter are present in many other aspects of our lives. They help us understand and analyze the world more accurately. So, what about starting this adventure and learning more about these concepts? Are you ready? Let's go!

Activity Title: “City Adventure: Unlocking Area and Perimeter”

Project Objective: The project's goal is to allow the students to explore, investigate and learn the concepts of area and perimeter. In addition, the activity aims to develop teamwork, problem-solving, communication, critical thinking and time management skills.

Detailed Project Description:

In this activity, the groups of students will create a fictional city on a large piece of cardboard. The city must contain several elements, such as: houses, schools, parks, stores, lakes, roads, among others. Each element must be a polygon (triangle, rectangle, square, etc.), and the students must calculate the area and perimeter of each element of the city.

Required Materials:

1. Large sheets of cardboard
2. Ruler
3. Pencil
4. Eraser
5. Colorful markers
6. Scissors
7. Glue
8. Graph paper (can be printed from the internet)

Detailed Step-by-Step Instructions for the Activity:

Step 1: Group Formation

The students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members. Each group will be responsible for creating a city on a piece of cardboard.

Step 2: City Planning

The groups must discuss and plan the city that they will create. They must decide where the houses, schools, parks, stores, etc will be located. Remember that each element of the city must be a polygon.

Step 3: Drawing the City
