Decimal Numbers

Contextualization

The decimal system is the numerical system we use daily. This system is based on ten units or multiples of ten, hence the name 'decimal'. The concept of decimal numbers is one of the most fundamental in mathematics and spans all levels of education, from elementary school to university.

Decimal numbers are an extension of integers and provide a way to represent quantities that are less than one unit. They are represented by a dot (called a decimal point) placed to the right of integers, with the decimal part representing fractions of a unit.

Importance of Decimal Numbers

Decimal numbers play an important role in our daily lives. Whether it's counting money, measuring distances, weighing objects, calculating grades in school, among many other situations that require precision. Understanding how to read, write, and order decimal numbers is an essential skill that everyone should develop.

The decimal system is used in almost every aspect of modern life. It is used in computer science, in science, in engineering, in finance, and even in our simple daily lives, such as when we shop or cook. Understanding this system is fundamental to our ability to function in modern society.

Practical Activity: Decimal Numbers Market

Activity Objective:

The objective of this activity is to enhance students' knowledge of decimal numbers, deepening their understanding of reading, writing, and ordering these numbers, as well as developing socio-emotional skills such as teamwork, time management, communication, and problem-solving.

Detailed Project Description:

In groups of 3 to 5, students will create and manage a 'Decimal Market' where the products to be sold will be represented by decimal numbers.

Each group will be responsible for creating a list of products, setting prices (using decimal numbers), and creating a catalog. The list of products should be extensive and varied, ensuring that the prices represent different classes of decimal numbers.

In addition, students will also be responsible for organizing the display of their products in order of price, that is, sorting their products based on decimal numbers.

After creating the 'Decimal Market', each group will visit the markets of other groups and make purchases, recording the transactions made.

At the end of the project, all groups will make a final cash count, adding up all sales and subtracting from the initial cash.

Necessary Materials:

  • Paper and pen
  • Magazine cutouts or printed images of products
  • Calculator
  • Ruler or measuring tape

Step by Step:

  1. Divide students into groups of 3 to 5.
  2. Each group must decide which products will be for sale in their 'Decimal Market' and set prices, ensuring a wide range of decimal numbers.
  3. Develop a catalog of products, with images and prices, noting the prices with the proper decimal notation.
  4. Organize the display of products in ascending or descending order of prices.
  5. Each group will visit the markets of others, making purchases and recording them.
  6. Finally, each group must make a final cash count and calculate the profit or loss.

After the practical activity, groups should write a report on the activity. This report should include:

  1. Introduction: The group should contextualize the project theme, explaining the importance of decimal numbers and how they are present in everyday situations, such as shopping and sales.
  2. Development: The group should detail the project execution process, explaining the choice of products, price setting, product ordering, and transaction recording. The results obtained, such as total sales and final cash count, should also be discussed.
  3. Conclusion: In this section, the group should reflect on what they learned throughout the project, focusing on the technical and socio-emotional skills developed.
  4. Bibliography: The group should list the sources of information used to develop the project, such as books, websites, videos, among others.

This report is a crucial part of the project, as it allows students to consolidate the knowledge acquired in practice and reflect on the learning experience. Additionally, it is an opportunity for students to exercise writing skills and structuring a scientific text.
