Context

In this activity, we will delve into the fascinating world of rational numbers. Rational numbers are a crucial concept in mathematics that deals with numbers that can be expressed as a fraction of two integers, with the denominator being non-zero. They form a set of numbers, denoted as Q, and include natural numbers, whole numbers, fractions, and terminating decimals.

As you learn about rational numbers, you will discover that all the numbers we use in our daily lives are rational numbers. If it's a number that can be written as a fraction, it's a rational number. This includes all whole numbers (since they can be written as fractions with a denominator of 1) and all finite and repeating decimals.

The distinction between a rational number and an irrational number is that rational numbers can be expressed as a ratio of two integers, while irrational numbers cannot. An example of an irrational number would be the square root of two (√2) or the number pi (π).

Rational numbers are integral to many concepts in mathematics and are used in nearly every field of science. Understanding and working with rational numbers effectively is essential for careers in engineering, economics, physics, computer science, and many other fields that rely on a solid mathematical foundation.

Our daily lives are also filled with examples of using rational numbers. When we go to the store and buy 1.5 kilograms of apples, we are using rational numbers. When we read a recipe that calls for 2/3 cup of flour, we are using rational numbers. When we look at the clock and see that it's 12:30, we are also using rational numbers.
