Shapes are the ways objects look. They are all around us: in our studies, in game pieces, in the food we eat, in our bodies, and even in space! These shapes can be simple, like a circle or a square, or complex, like a pentagon or a hexagon. Each shape has special characteristics that make it unique and interesting.

Now, let's delve a little deeper into our knowledge about shapes. Did you know that shapes have properties? That's right! Properties are special characteristics that each shape possesses. For example, the circle is the only shape that has no angles. The square, on the other hand, has four equal sides and four right angles. The triangle can have three sides and three angles of different sizes.

The properties of shapes are fundamental to mathematics because they help us understand how they fit together and interact with each other. Imagine if we didn't know the properties of a triangle: how could we know that three triangles together form a square? Or how could we calculate the area of a soccer field if we didn't know the properties of a rectangle?

Therefore, it is very important that we know the properties of shapes well. They are present in various mathematical concepts, such as geometry, measurements, and even in everyday problems. Now it's time to get our hands dirty and explore the properties of shapes in a practical and fun way!

Practical Activity: 'Explorers of Shapes'

Project Objective

The objective of this project is for students to identify, describe, and compare the properties of different geometric shapes, as well as to exercise socio-emotional skills such as communication, teamwork, time management, problem-solving, and creative thinking.

Project Description

'Explorers of Shapes' is a practical activity in which students, divided into groups of 3 to 5 members, will be challenged to create a 'Shapes Catalog.' Each group must choose 5 geometric shapes (circle, triangle, square, rectangle, pentagon, hexagon, or any other shape they want to explore) and investigate their properties.

Students should research, draw, and describe the characteristics of each chosen shape, including the number of sides, the type of angle (right, acute, or obtuse), and whether the sides are equal or different. Additionally, students should find out where these shapes can be found in everyday life and how they are used.

Necessary Materials

  • Colored pencils, markers, and/or crayons
  • Ruler
  • Bond paper or cardboard
  • Books, magazines, or internet access for research

Step by Step

  1. Group Formation: Students should organize themselves into groups of 3 to 5 people.

  2. Shape Selection: Each group should choose 5 geometric shapes to explore. Remember that all chosen shapes must be different from each other.

  3. Researching Properties: Using books, magazines, or the internet, students should research the properties of each chosen shape. Take note of the most important information, such as the number of sides, the type of angle, and whether the sides are equal or different.

  4. Drawing the Shapes: Now, it's time to put creativity into practice! Each student in the group should draw the researched shapes on a sheet of paper or cardboard. Remember to put effort into the drawings and include the characteristics of each shape.

  5. Describing the Shapes: Next to each drawing, students should write a brief description of the shape, including the researched properties. Additionally, they should think of examples of where these shapes can be found in everyday life and how they are used.

  6. Assembling the Shapes Catalog: When all drawings and descriptions are ready, students should organize everything into a 'Shapes Catalog.' This catalog should list all chosen shapes, along with their respective descriptions.

  7. Presenting the Shapes Catalog: Finally, each group should present their 'Shapes Catalog' to the class. During the presentation, students should explain the properties of the shapes, where they can be found in everyday life, and how they are used.
