Mathematics is a discipline that permeates our lives, and it is common for us to use it without even noticing. When we travel, cook, plan our time, in various everyday situations. An area of Mathematics that we frequently use is called 'Measurement'. Measuring means comparing a quantity with another of the same kind, using one of them as a unit. In this context, units of measurement are extremely important so that we can quantify things. Thus, measuring the length of an object means comparing it to a unit of length.

In Mathematics, length measurements are very important and are used in various everyday applications. For example, to know the distance between two cities, to determine the size of an object, to calculate the area of a plot of land, among others. Therefore, understanding and knowing how to convert different units of length measurement is essential for our daily lives.

The study of length measurements is essential for students' education and is directly related to other disciplines, such as Physics and Geography. Physics, for example, frequently uses length measurements in its calculations and theories. Geography, on the other hand, uses length measurements to calculate distances on the planet, to determine the size of regions, countries, states, cities, etc.

Practical Activity: 'Exploring Length Measurement Units'

Project Objective

The objective of this practical activity is to provide students with the opportunity to understand and explore, in a playful and interactive way, the different units of length measurement, their relationships, conversions, and applications in our daily lives. In addition, this activity also aims to develop teamwork, communication, and time management skills, important for academic and personal life.

Detailed Project Description

In this project, students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 participants. Each group will be responsible for creating a 'Measurement Park', a physical space where various activities and games related to the conversion of length measurement units will be presented.

The park should be divided into stations, and each station should address a different theme related to length measurements and their conversions, such as meter, kilometer, and centimeter, for example.

Students can create games, conduct experiments, build models, present demonstrations, etc., everything that stimulates learning in a creative and interactive way. In addition, each station should have a poster with explanations about the theme presented.

Required Materials

  1. Cardboard, wood, or other material to build the park stations;
  2. Glue, scissors, adhesive tape;
  3. Paper, markers, colored pencils, and other materials to create explanatory posters;
  4. Various materials for creating games and experiments (depends on what the group decides to do).

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution

  1. Division of students into groups of 3 to 5 participants;
  2. Research and study on length measurement units and their conversions;
  3. Planning the Measurement Park: defining the themes of the stations, creating games and experiments, preparing explanatory posters;
  4. Construction of the Measurement Park;
  5. Presentation of the park to the other groups.

Project Deliverables

At the end of the project, each group must deliver:

  1. The Measurement Park: Which will be evaluated in terms of creativity, relevance to the proposed theme, quality of the materials produced, and visual presentation.
  2. Written report containing:
  • Introduction: Detailed description of the project, including the contextualization of the theme, the relevance and application of length measurements in the real world, and the main objective of the project.
  • Development: Detailed description of the activities carried out, including the theory behind length measurement units, the methodology used in the construction of the Measurement Park, and the presentation and discussion of the results obtained.
  • Conclusion: Recap of the main points of the project, explanation of the learnings obtained, and conclusions drawn about the project.
  • Bibliography: Indication of the sources used for the work.

All group members must actively participate in writing the report, with each being responsible for a part of the document.
