Objective of the Project
The objective of this project is to allow you, little pizza makers, to practice the notion of fractions and rational numbers in a fun and practical way. You will create your own pizzas, dividing them into fractions, and then, you will present to the class how you did it.
Detailed Project Description
In this activity, each group will transform into a pizzeria and create their own pizzas. You will learn how to divide a pizza into fractions and represent these fractions visually. In addition, you will practice adding and subtracting fractions to divide the pizza with friends.
Required Materials
- Large piece of cardboard (to be the pizza base)
- Coloring pencils and markers
- Blunt scissors
- Glue
- Magazines (to cut out and paste onto the pizza if you want to make a pizza with toppings)
- Ruler (optional)
Step by Step

On your piece of cardboard, draw a large circle to be your pizza. You can use a plate or any round object to help make the circle.

Now, let's divide the pizza into fractions. You can choose the number of slices you want, but ideally it should be a number that can be divided by all the members of the group. For example, if there are 4 people in the group, you can divide the pizza into 4, 8 or 12 slices.

After dividing the pizza, let's color each slice. Remember that each slice represents a fraction. For example, if the pizza was divided into 8 slices, each slice represents 1/8 of the pizza.

Now, if you want, you can use the magazines to cut out and paste the pizza toppings. Remember that each topping should be on a number of slices that corresponds to its fraction.
