Contextualization

One of the important skills we develop throughout our academic life is the ability to convert measurements from one unit to another. This helps us better understand the world around us and solve various everyday problems. For example, if you need to know the size in meters of a plot of land that was measured in hectares, or vice versa. Thus, the study of area measurement conversion is extremely important and applicable to various real-life situations.

Area is a two-dimensional measure (width and length) that can be used to describe the size of an object or space. For example, we can measure the area of a room, a soccer field, or even a country. Area is generally measured in square units, such as square meters (m²), square centimeters (cm²), or hectares (ha).

However, we often need to convert these area units. For example, if you are planning to plant on a plot of land and the quantity of seeds is given per square meter, you will need to convert the size of the land from hectares to square meters.

Introduction

In this project, we will have the opportunity to explore the conversion of area measurements in a fun and engaging way. We will demystify complex mathematical concepts through practical and playful activities that will improve our understanding of the subject and also develop our social skills, such as teamwork, time management, and problem-solving.

Studying area conversions allows us to connect mathematical concepts with real life and see how they are important for our understanding of the world. This helps us solve practical everyday issues, such as calculating the amount of paint needed to paint a room or the amount of fertilizer needed for a garden.

Practical Activity - "Measuring and Converting Spaces"

Project Objectives

  • Apply the concepts of area measurements and their conversions in real context.
  • Develop teamwork, time management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Reinforce research and writing skills through the report that will be produced.

Detailed Project Description

This interdisciplinary project will focus on the application of area measurements and their conversions. Students, in groups of 3 to 5, will identify, measure, and convert the areas of different spaces in the school. The challenge is to relate mathematical competencies with information from Geography disciplines, such as understanding physical space, and Arts, in the visual and aesthetic perception of the environment.

Required Materials

  • Measuring Tape
  • Paper and pens/pencils
  • Calculator
  • Camera or cell phone with a camera (optional)
  • Computer with Internet access for research

Detailed Activity Steps

  1. Space Identification: Groups must identify at least four different spaces in the school to measure their areas - classroom, sports court, library, playground, etc. Each chosen space must be documented with drawings or photographs.

  2. Measurement: Using the measuring tape, students must measure the length and width of the chosen spaces and calculate the area in square meters (m²).

  3. Area Unit Conversion: After finding the area in square meters, groups must convert this measurement to other area units (cm², km², etc.).

  4. Results Presentation: Each group will prepare a visual presentation (a poster, a digital presentation, etc.) illustrating the measured spaces, the measurements found, and the conversion process carried out.

  5. Final Report: Finally, each group must prepare a written report with the following topics: Introduction (describing the project's objective), Development (explaining the theory of area measurements, detailing how the measurements were taken and the conversions performed), Conclusions (the learnings obtained and the conclusions drawn from the project), and Bibliography (the sources used to understand the subject and complete the project).

Project Deliverables

The results of this project must be delivered in two ways:

  1. Visual Presentation: A presentation of the chosen spaces, the area measurements taken, and the unit conversions. This must be accompanied by an oral explanation of the process carried out.

  2. Written Report: This document should contain the project details from space selection, measurements, conversions to the conclusions obtained. This is the part that will tie all theoretical learning with the practice carried out. The Development section should include details of how they measured and converted the measurements and the problems encountered. The Conclusions should address what the students learned from the project and how they would apply it in real situations.
