Project Objective
The objective of this project is to put into practice the concepts of fractions and comparison between them. To do this, students will create a "board game" where victory will be achieved through the correct comparison and ordering of fractions.
Project Description
Students, divided into groups of 3 to 5, will create a board-style game. In this game, the spaces will be occupied by fraction cards. To advance, players must choose two or more cards and order them correctly. The game is won by the first player to cross the entire board. By the end of the project, students should be able to compare and order fractions with ease.
Necessary Materials
- Cardboard to make the board.
- Colored poster boards for the fraction cards.
- Scissors.
- Colored pens.
- Dice.
- Small objects to use as player tokens.
Step by Step
- Each group should create the game board by drawing a path with several spaces on the cardboard.
- On poster board, students should create a series of fraction cards. Each card should contain a different fraction. The fractions should be both simple (like 1/2 or 3/4) and more complex (like 7/12 or 5/8).
- The fraction cards are shuffled and distributed around the board in piles.
- Each player chooses a token and places it on the starting space. Players decide the order of play.
- On their turn, a player rolls the dice, and the number rolled will be the number of fraction cards they must pick up.
- The player must then order the fractions from smallest to largest. If successful, they advance the number of spaces equal to the number rolled on the dice. If not, they remain in the same place.
- The game continues until a player crosses the entire board. That player is the winner.
