But what does this mean? To put it simply, it's when we have a number of objects or a quantity, and we need to split it into a set number of equal pieces. It is a skill that we often use every day in life, whether we are splitting food portions with friends, or dividing supplies for a craft project.

That is why our 'Partitioning Into Equal Shares' project is here to help us explore it in a fun and hands-on way using real-life scenarios and games to develop our understanding of the concept. We'll be putting problem-solving skills, logical thinking, and working as a team into practice, which are all important life skills!

Getting Started

Partitioning into equal shares is an important concept in mathematics and a fundamental part of division. It helps us to divide quantities equally in a way that is simple and practical and can help with everyday problem solving too.

As we already know, when solving a division, we need to know what our dividend is (the number we are dividing), our divisor (the number we are dividing by), and the quotient (the answer). When we are partitioning, we also have to think about 'equal shares'; splitting the dividend into pieces that are all the same size.

So, if we have 12 apples, for example, and we want to share them out equally amongst 4 people, we must see how many apples each person gets. Our dividend is 12, our divisor is 4 and our quotient will be 3. The answer will be that each person receives 3 apples.

Getting to grips with this concept will help us solve problems in math and also in the real world. What's more, it will help to develop our reasoning and logical thinking skills and give us more tools in our problem-solving toolkit. Activity: The Great Divide

Project Aim

The aim of this project is for students to explore partitioning into equal shares while being creative and hands-on. We're going to make board games which involve dividing items equally among players.

Project Outline

First, we'll form into small groups of 3-5. Then we'll each make a board game which shows how partitioning is used to share things fairly.

Materials

• Card or thick paper for the board
• Pens/pencils/crayons
• A dice (or you can make one)
• Game pieces (buttons, bottle tops, counters)
• A sheet of paper for the instructions

Step-by-step Guide

1. Decide on your scenario: Each group needs to think of a situation where people or characters would need to divide something into equal shares. This could be a pizza at a party, paint for an art project – anything you like!

2. Create your gameboard: Use your card or paper and pens to design the game board. Split your board up into squares and have each square represent a different part of your chosen scenario.

3. Game rules: Have a group chat and agree on what the rules of your game are going to be. Think about how partitioning into equal shares will fit into your game, and how players will move around the board.

4. Make the game: Now create the dice, game pieces, and any other materials your game may need. Maybe even design a special logo, and don't forget to be creative!

5. Testing your game: When you've made your game, it's time to see if it works. Check that your rules make sense, that the division is fair, and of course, that your game is actually fun to play. You may want to rewrite or change your rules or gameboard after trying it out.

6. Final presentations: Groups will each need to present their board game ideas to the class, explaining their scenario and rules and showing us how to play.

Submission

Each group will hand in their finished board game and a short (handwritten is fine) project report which should include the following: an explanation of your game's scenario and how it uses the idea of equal partitioning. It should also include a reflection of the experience and how this has helped your understanding of partitioning into equal shares.
