Contextualization

Mathematics is a discipline of vital importance in our daily lives, and the study of angles is a fundamental part of it. The concept of angles is quite common and can be found in various scenarios, from civil construction to art.

Angles are used to describe the world around us, allowing us to represent direction and rotation, and are extremely necessary in geometry, a subdiscipline of mathematics that deals with shapes and sizes. In addition, the concept of angles is also of great use in various other disciplines such as architecture, engineering, navigation, astronomy, and many others.

The classification of angles is an essential part of this study. Angles can be classified as acute, right, obtuse, and straight. Each of these classifications gives us valuable information about the properties of angles and how they relate to each other.

By studying angles and their classifications, we can better understand the world around us and solve complex problems. Considering the relevance of this topic, it is necessary to develop a project that provides a playful and engaging approach to the subject. Therefore, the proposal of our project is to learn through practice, carrying out activities that stimulate collaboration and creativity.

Practical Activity: "The Construction of Angles"

Project Objectives

  1. Learn to classify angles.
  2. Develop teamwork and communication skills.
  3. Integrate mathematical knowledge with visual arts.

Project Description

In this project, students will work in groups of 3 to 5 people. The project has a total estimated time of 12 hours to be completed by each participating student, which can be divided into several sessions.

Students will create a three-dimensional model of a city. They should incorporate different types of angles in the construction of their buildings and roads. The city must have at least one representation of each type of angle: acute, right, obtuse, and straight.

Required Materials

  1. Cardboard or paperboard for constructions.
  2. Pencils, erasers, and rulers.
  3. Pens of different colors.
  4. Blunt scissors.
  5. Glue.
  6. Protractor.

Step by Step

  1. Students should research and sketch the city they want to build. The sketch should contain the representation of the four types of angles studied.
  2. Next, students will transfer the sketch to the cardboard or paperboard and cut out the pieces for the city construction.
  3. The city will be assembled with the help of glue and tape.
  4. Each angle found in the project must be identified with different colors (each color representing a type of angle) and measured with the protractor.
  5. Students should keep a photographic record of the entire process, from the initial idea to the final construction.
  6. At the end of the construction, students will present their city to the class, explaining where and how they used each type of angle.

Deliverables and Written Document

After completing the practical part of the project, students must write a report containing four main topics:

  1. Introduction: should contextualize the theme, its relevance and real-world application, as well as the objective of this project.
  2. Development: in this topic, students should detail the theory of angles and their classifications, explain the activity in detail, indicate the methodology used, and present and discuss the results obtained. It is important that the report includes photos taken during the construction of the city.
  3. Conclusions: students must conclude the work by summarizing their main points, the learnings obtained, and the conclusions drawn about the project. Here, students will also reflect on teamwork and how they managed time to complete the project.
  4. Bibliography: students must indicate the sources they relied on to work on the project.

Students must submit the report along with the model of the city built. Both will be evaluated not only for the correct knowledge and application of angle concepts but also for the creativity, teamwork, and time management skills demonstrated.
