Contextualization

Equivalent fractions are a fundamental part of mathematics and are widely used in several everyday situations. Having a solid understanding of this concept is essential for the comprehension of many other areas of mathematics. Although the idea of fractions may seem intimidating at first, it is actually quite simple.

Fractions are used to represent equal parts of a whole. For example, if you have a whole pizza and divide it into four equal parts, each part, or slice, is 1/4 of the pizza. However, if you put two of these parts together, instead of having two parts of 1/4 of the pizza, you will have one part that corresponds to 1/2 of the pizza. Thus, we can say that fractions 1/2 and 2/4 are equivalent because they represent the same quantity.

Equivalent fractions can be identified in several ways. One of the most common ways is through the use of a technique called simplification, where the numerator and the denominator of a fraction are divided by the same number until it is no longer possible to divide them. A fraction that can no longer be simplified is called an irreducible fraction.

Regarding the importance of equivalent fractions, they are used in all areas of mathematics and in many real-world situations. For example, in cooking, recipes often require fractional measurements of ingredients that can be expressed differently but that in the end result in the same quantity. Equivalent fractions are also used in civil construction, when it is necessary to fraction measurements of materials, and even in financial situations, such as in the calculation of interest.

Practical Activity: The Equivalent Fraction Scavenger Hunt

Objective of the Project:

The objective of this project is that students learn to identify and work with equivalent fractions in a fun and collaborative way. In addition, they will develop socioemotional skills such as time management, communication, problem solving, creative thinking and proactivity.

Detailed Description of the Project:

In groups of 3 to 5 students, the teams will participate in a "treasure hunt" with riddles based on equivalent fractions. Each riddle will have a fraction that will be solved into an equivalent fraction. These equivalent fractions, in turn, will lead students to a specific location in the school where the next riddle can be found.

Materials Required:

  • Cards with fraction riddles for students to solve. Each riddle should involve the identification or creation of an equivalent fraction.
  • Adequate space in the school to hide the riddles.
  • Paper and pen for each group to record their findings and solutions.

Detailed Step-by-step:

  1. Preparation: The teacher will prepare the riddles focused on equivalent fractions and hide them in various locations around the school.

  2. Group Division: The students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 and each group will receive a set of riddles to solve.

  3. Riddle Solving: The groups should work together to solve the riddles. Each correct solution of a riddle (an equivalent fraction) will take them to the location of the next riddle.

  4. Recording Findings: Each group must keep a written record of all equivalent fractions they have discovered and the corresponding riddles.

  5. Presentation of Results: After locating all the riddles, each group should present their findings to the class, explaining the process of finding the equivalent fractions and how that led them to the next riddle.

  6. Final Report: Each group should prepare a detailed report on the project. The report should contain:

    • Introduction: Contextualization of equivalent fractions and their importance, along with the description of the project's objective.

    • Development: The section should include the theory of equivalent fractions, the detailed description of the activity carried out, the methodology used and the results obtained.

    • Conclusion: Students should restate the main points, highlighting what they have learned and the conclusions they have drawn from the project.

    • Bibliography: It should indicate the sources on which they based themselves to work on the project, such as books, web pages, videos, etc.

This project should be completed in one month and each student should dedicate 5 to 10 hours of individual work, including preparation time, solving the riddles, group discussions and preparing the final report.
