Why is it important to add and subtract decimals?

Adding and subtracting are two of the fundamental operations in mathematics. They are like incredible tools that help us deal with everyday situations, from simple things like shopping at the supermarket to more complex things like budgeting a company's expenses.

Decimals, in turn, are a way to represent smaller parts of a whole or a quantity. They are crucial for dealing with values that are not whole numbers, in other words, they have fractions. Think of a cake: if you have 1/2 of a cake, that means you have half of the whole cake, in other words, 0.5.

Now, imagine you have $10.00 and want to buy a package of cookies that costs $3.50. To know how much money will be left, you need to use subtraction! And if you want to buy two packages of cookies? To know the total amount you will spend, you need to use addition!

These are just a few examples of how adding and subtracting decimals are important in our daily lives. Mathematics is present in everything we do, and understanding these concepts helps us make informed decisions and manage our finances more effectively.

The Importance of Socioemotional Skills in Learning Mathematics

Before we start our project, it is very important to talk about socioemotional skills. They are a set of competencies that help us manage our emotions, work well in teams, solve problems, and make decisions. But what do they have to do with mathematics?

Mathematics is much more than just numbers and calculations. It involves logical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication. And all these socioemotional skills are essential for us to understand and apply mathematical concepts.

Think about it: when we solve a math problem, we need to manage our emotions so we don't feel frustrated or discouraged. We need to work well in teams to exchange ideas, listen to different perspectives, and collaborate in finding a solution. And of course, we need to make decisions all the time, whether it's about which strategy to use to solve a problem or how to explain our reasoning to others.

So, during this project, in addition to improving our mathematical skills, we will also strengthen our socioemotional skills. Activity Title: "The Great Journey of Decimals"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to allow students to dive into the practice of adding and subtracting decimals, while developing socioemotional skills such as time management, problem-solving, communication, and creative thinking.

Detailed Project Description

Students, divided into groups of 3 to 5, will be challenged to plan and carry out a "Great Journey of Decimals". Each group will be responsible for planning a vacation trip, choosing the destination, calculating the costs, and managing a limited budget.

They will have to add and subtract decimals to calculate the costs of transportation, accommodation, food, entertainment, and much more. In addition, each group must keep a logbook, recording their decisions, calculations, and reflections throughout the project.

Required Materials

  • Pencil and eraser
  • Ruler
  • Calculator
  • Paper for notes and for the logbook

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution

  1. Group Formation and Destination Definition: Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5. Each group must decide on the destination of their trip.

  2. Planning: Groups must make a detailed plan of the trip. They must decide how they will travel (by car, bus, plane, etc.), where they will stay, what activities they will do, and what meals they will eat.

  3. Price Research: After planning, groups must research the prices of all trip expenses. They must use decimals to represent the prices (for example, $150.00 for accommodation, $25.00 for a meal, etc.).

  4. Cost Calculation: With the prices in hand, groups must calculate the total cost of the trip. They must add up all the prices to find the total cost and subtract this value from the provided budget ($500.00, for example).

  5. Logbook: Throughout the process, groups must keep a logbook, recording all the decisions they made, the calculations they did, and the reflections they had. The logbook must be updated daily and will be delivered as part of the project.

  6. Project Presentation: At the end of the project, each group must prepare a presentation for the class, sharing their "Great Journey of Decimals". They must explain the chosen destination, the trip planning, the calculations made, and the reflections they had along the way.
