Units of time are used to represent the duration of an event, the interval between two events, or the date of an event. In our daily lives, we use hours, minutes, and seconds to measure time. But in some contexts, such as scientific, industrial, or engineering applications, smaller units such as milliseconds or even microseconds may be used. Converting between these units is essential for understanding and applying these concepts.
In mathematics, the ability to convert time measurements from one unit to another is a key competency for solving practical problems and for understanding how different units of measure relate to each other. This concept involves a deeper understanding of number systems, and multiplication and division, which are fundamental skills in mathematics.
The ability to convert units of time is not only useful in mathematics, but also in many other areas of life. For example, if you'd like to cook a recipe that asks for a cooking time in minutes, but your timer only measures in seconds, you'll need to convert the units in order to follow the recipe correctly. Or, if you're planning a trip and want to know how long it will take to get to your destination, you'll need to be able to convert hours into minutes to calculate the total travel time.

Hands-on Activity
Activity Title: The Playful Stopwatch
Project Aim
- To learn and apply the concept of converting units of time.

Detailed Project Description
Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members and will create a "Playful Stopwatch". This is a project in which students will invent a series of activities that are related to time and its conversions. For example, one activity could be "Run 200 meters and record the time in seconds, then convert it to minutes". Each group must create at least 10 different activities.
Once these activities have been created, the group must perform each of them, recording the timed duration in one unit (such as seconds) and converting it to another (e.g., to minutes or hours), as appropriate. Students will record the time for each activity, both after performing it and after converting it.

- Notebook and pencils
- Computer or tablet with internet access
Detailed Steps for Carrying Out the Activity
- Divide the class into groups of 3 to 5 students.
- Each group must create a list of 10 distinct activities that involve performing a task and measuring the time it takes to do that task. The activities should be varied and creative, and could include physical challenges (such as running a certain distance), manual tasks (such as folding a series of origami), mental challenges (such as solving a puzzle), or any other tasks the students can imagine.
- Once the list of activities has been created, each group must perform the tasks while measuring the time they take with the stopwatch. The aim is to practice measuring time and converting between different units.
