Context

The study of Mathematics is an essential part of school learning, but it is often presented in an abstract way, which can distance students from the subject. That is why the project 'Common Denominators' is so important. In it, we will work with fractions, one of the most useful concepts in many areas and disciplines, such as science, engineering, cooking, and music, just to name a few.

In everyday life, we always come across situations where we need to divide something into equal parts. Whether it's a pizza that needs to be shared among friends, a budget to be distributed among different projects, or study time divided among different subjects. We are always dealing with fractions, even without realizing it.

However, often we need to compare or add fractions that do not have the same denominator, and that's when things can get a little more complicated. This is where the concept of common denominator comes in, which is nothing more than a number to which both denominators of the fractions can be evenly divided. This concept is as vital in our daily lives as it is in more complex subjects.

To help us solidify our understanding of common denominators, we will carry out a practical project and, with that, we will see how these concepts are embedded in our daily lives and learn to master them. This work will be guided by some bibliographical references and trusted digital sources:

  • The book 'Mathematics: Context & Applications', by Luiz Roberto Dante, which clearly and didactically presents the topic of fractions.

  • The website 'Só Matemática', which offers a variety of exercises and explanations on all kinds of mathematical topics, including common denominators.

  • The YouTube channel 'Matemática Rio', which brings explanatory videos in a dynamic and playful way.

Introduction

Common denominators are a fundamental part of the study of fractions. Understanding this topic allows us to manipulate fractions more efficiently, especially when we need to add or subtract them. When working with fractions that have different denominators, we often need to find a common denominator before performing the operation.

This common denominator should be the smallest possible number that is a multiple of the denominators of the fractions we are working with. With this new denominator in hand, we can convert all fractions to have this same denominator, simplifying the operation.

The common denominator is a very powerful mathematical tool. Without it, it would be much more difficult to solve problems involving fractions. Therefore, it is crucial that we, as mathematics students, become familiar with this concept and know how to quickly and efficiently find common denominators.

Practical Activity: 'Treasure Hunt of Common Denominators'

Project Objective

This practical activity aims to encourage students to learn about common denominators in a fun and interactive way. Working in groups, students will be challenged to solve different problems involving fractions with different denominators, using the concept of common denominators to find the solution.

Detailed Project Description

This project will be a mathematical treasure hunt! Where the 'treasure' can only be found by correctly solving problems involving fractions and common denominators. Each group will receive a treasure map with several stations marked. At each station, there will be a mathematical problem that involves identifying common denominators and performing operations with fractions. The correct answer will lead the group to the next station and eventually to the treasure.

Required Materials

  • Paper and pen to write down answers and calculations
  • Treasure maps (provided by the teacher)
  • Printed or digital mathematical problems (provided by the teacher)
  • Treasure (small prizes or completion certificates)

Detailed Activity Steps

  1. Divide the class into groups of 3 to 5 students.

  2. Provide each group with a treasure map and the mathematical problems.

  3. The students must then work together to solve the first mathematical problem.

  4. Once the group believes they have the correct answer, they should present it to the teacher. If the answer is correct, the teacher will indicate on the map the location of the next station.

  5. This process will repeat until the group reaches the last station and discovers the treasure.

  6. During the process, students should record all their answers and calculations. These notes will be used later to prepare the final project report.

The duration of the activity will be approximately 5 to 10 hours, including time for solving mathematical problems, group discussion, and preparation of the final report.

Project Deliverables

After completing the practical activity, each group must produce a report detailing what they did and what they learned. This report should be divided into the following sections:

  • Introduction: students should contextualize the theme, explaining the relevance of common denominators and the objective of this project.

  • Development: here students should discuss the theory of common denominators, explain the activity in detail, indicate the methodology used (how they solved the problems, how they worked in groups, etc.), and present and discuss the results obtained (if they managed to find the treasure, what difficulties they encountered, how they overcame these difficulties, etc.).

  • Conclusion: students should indicate the main learnings from the activity, how their understanding of common denominators has changed, and how they plan to apply this knowledge in the future.

  • Bibliography: students should indicate the sources they relied on to carry out the project, such as books, web pages, videos, as well as any additional resources they used to help solve the mathematical problems.

Throughout the project, students will be encouraged to develop a series of socio-emotional skills, such as time management, effective communication, problem-solving, creative thinking, and proactivity.

We hope that by the end of this activity, students will have a deeper and more practical understanding of common denominators and, most importantly, have fun learning mathematics!
