Contextualization
Combat sports are a form of physical expression that has been practiced throughout all of human history and in all cultures. Nowadays, it is an essential component of the Physical Education curriculum as it presents the potential for the development of physical skills such as endurance, strength, flexibility, motor coordination, as well as socio-emotional skills like respect, discipline, self-control, and cooperation.
From the Maori warrior dance, Haka, to Chinese Kung Fu, from Japanese Sumo to Brazilian Capoeira, martial arts and combat sports embody a rich cultural heritage. Combat sports do not only refer to the physical and technical aspects but also encompass a philosophy of life, respect for the opponent, and constant self-improvement.
Introduction
In this project, we will explore the universe of combat sports and their practices. The goal will be to deepen our knowledge and appreciation of combat sports as a form of cultural expression, as a discipline that develops physical and mental skills, and as an excellent tool for education.
We will study how combat sports are rooted in community and regional traditions, in indigenous and African heritage, and in other cultures around the world. We will explore the differences between combat sports and brawls, and between combat sports and other physical practices such as dance and sports.
As part of this study, we will discuss safety in combat sports and learn about rules, uniforms, and scoring systems in different martial arts and combat competitions.
Practical Activity
Activity Title: "The World of Combat: A Multidisciplinary Study"
Project Objective:
The objective of this project is to explore the world of combat sports, understand their origins, identify the different forms of combat sports in the community and regional context, as well as those of indigenous and African heritage. Students will investigate the characteristics, rules, belt standards, and scoring systems of some selected combat sports and, finally, will perform a practical demonstration, always ensuring safety practices.
Detailed Project Description:
Students, divided into groups of 3 to 5, will research different combat sports, their histories, origins, distinct characteristics, rules, equipment, belt standards, and scoring systems. Each group will have to choose two different combat sports to focus their research and presentations on.
In addition to theoretical research and study, students will also have to develop a practical demonstration routine for each researched combat sport, focusing on basic movements and building a performance that demonstrates the acquired knowledge. For this, they must follow all safety regulations and use appropriate protective equipment.
Required Materials:
- Internet access for research
- Books and other reference sources
- Proper protective equipment for combat sports practice (if available)
- Adequate space for the safe practice of combat sport movements
Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution:
- Group formation and task division.
- Selection of two combat sports to focus on research and practice.
- Research and study on the chosen combat sports: origins, distinct characteristics, rules, equipment, belt standards, and scoring systems.
- Development of a demonstration routine for each combat sport, focusing on basic movements and respecting all safety regulations.
- Review and practice of the demonstration routine.
- Presentation of the research and practical demonstration to the class.
- Writing of the final report, including all research steps, the process of developing the demonstration routine, and the acquired learnings.
The project should take approximately two weeks to complete, considering the time needed for research, practice, and writing the final report.
Project Delivery:
At the end of the project, each group must deliver a detailed report containing the following sections:
- Introduction: Contextualization of the chosen combat sports, their relevance in the world of martial arts, and the project's objective.
- Development: Detailed description of the research conducted, in-depth explanation of the characteristics, rules, equipment, belt standards, and scoring systems of the chosen combat sports. Discussion on the methodology used for the development of the demonstration routine. Presentation and argumentation of the results obtained, both theoretical and practical.
- Conclusion: Review of the main points of the work, reflection on the acquired learnings, and final comments on the project.
- Bibliography: Complete list of consulted sources, including books, websites, videos, etc.
Each group must also present their demonstration routine to the class, explaining the performed movements and how they connect with the acquired theoretical knowledge.
