It includes the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small and large intestines, rectum, and anus, as well as glands such as the pancreas and liver. Each part of the system has a specific role in digesting food.
The digestive system does not work alone. It is aided by the circulatory system, which transports nutrients throughout the body, and by the respiratory system, which provides the necessary oxygen for the burning of these nutrients. This means that learning about the digestive system helps us better understand the functioning of our entire body.
The digestive system has a great impact on our daily lives. Eating a healthy and balanced diet is important to ensure that our digestive system functions as best as possible. Furthermore, many diseases are related to the digestive system, from common infections to more serious conditions. Therefore, learning about the digestive system can help us improve our health and well-being.

Practical Activity
Activity Title:
"Digestion in Practice: Getting to Know the Digestive System through Science and Culinary Arts"
Project Objective:
The objective of this project is to learn the theoretical concepts about the digestive system and apply them in a practical and playful way, through the creation of a three-dimensional anatomical model and a nutritionally balanced menu.
Detailed Project Description:
This project will be a team effort, developed by groups of 3 to 5 students, and will have an estimated duration of over twelve hours per participant. It will be divided into two main parts:
- Building a three-dimensional model of the digestive system.
- Creating a nutritionally balanced menu, based on the understanding of the digestive system's functioning.
Both activities should be documented in a written report, which will include the concepts learned, the steps taken to complete the tasks, analysis and discussion of the results, conclusions, and the bibliography used.
Required Materials:
For the completion of this project, the following materials will be needed:
- Various materials for building the three-dimensional model (cardboard, modeling clay, paint, etc).
- Computer with internet access for research.
- Books and reference materials on the digestive system and nutrition.
- Ingredients to prepare the dishes from the created menu.
Step-by-Step Guide for the Activity:
Step 1: Research
- Conduct research on the human digestive system. Understand its parts and functions and how the foods we consume are digested.
Step 2: Construction of the Three-Dimensional Model
- Working as a team, create a three-dimensional model of the digestive system. Each part should be identified and clearly labeled.
Step 3: Nutritional Menu
- Based on the acquired knowledge, create a menu for a week, taking into account the body's nutritional needs. Remember that the types of foods we ingest directly impact the digestive system.
Step 4: Preparation and Tasting
- Choose at least one day from the menu and prepare the meals. During the tasting, discuss how each food is processed by the digestive system.
Step 5: Documentation
- Each group member will participate in writing the report, documenting the entire process from the initial research to the completion of the project. Include the introduction, development, conclusions, and bibliography used.
By doing this project, students will have the opportunity to combine theory with practice, understanding the digestive system in a fun and interactive way.
