Matter is everything that surrounds us. We, our friends, the table you sit at, the air we breathe, it is all made up of matter. It can be found in different forms, such as solids, liquids, and gases. For example, water can be a solid when it is frozen, a liquid when we drink a glass of water, and a gas when we boil it. Isn't that fascinating?

Getting Started

In this project, we will start building our foundation of knowledge about matter. There are many concepts to explore, but don't worry, we will do it in a fun and engaging way!

1) What is Matter? Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. It can be seen and felt, like a book or a piece of wood, but it can also be invisible, like the air we breathe.

2) States of Matter: Matter can exist in three states: solid, liquid, and gas. Each of these states has its own unique characteristics. For example, water is a solid in the form of ice, a liquid when we drink it, and a gas when it turns into vapor.

3) Changes in State: Matter can also change from one state to another. This is called a change of state. Water, for instance, can change from a solid state to a liquid state when it is heated, and from a liquid state to a gas state when it is boiled.

4) Properties of Matter: Matter has various properties that we can observe and measure. Some common properties include color, size, shape, texture, odor, and many more.

Hands-on Activity: "Matter Matters"

Project Goal:

To explore the concepts of matter, its states and changes of states, as well as the properties of matter, through conducting a series of hands-on experiments and creating a final discovery report.

Detailed Project Description:

Students will be divided into teams of 3-5. Each team will plan and conduct a series of experiments focused on different aspects of matter and its properties. The experiments should be documented in a dedicated logbook (notebook or binder) that will transform into a final "Discovery Report" at the end of the project.

Required Materials:

• Various matter materials: water, ice, sand, rocks, balloons, etc.
• Mixing and measuring containers (cups, spoons, etc.).
• Stove (to be used with adult supervision).
• Pencils, pens, rulers, and paper for note-taking.
• Camera or smartphone (for photo documentation, if possible).

Project Steps:

1. Form Teams: Divide the class into teams of 3-5 students.

2. Experiment Planning: Each team should plan a series of experiments that will investigate different aspects of matter and its properties. For example, one experiment could explore the change of state of water, while another could explore the properties of solids.

5. Creating the Discovery Report: At the conclusion of the project, each team will transform their logbook into a final "Discovery Report" that compiles their observations and conclusions. This report can be organized as a story, with a beginning, middle, and end, telling the tale of their journey through matter.

Deliverable Format:
