Contextualization

The respiratory system is fundamental to the life of humans and many living beings. It is through this system that we perform gas exchange, meaning we introduce oxygen into our bodies when we inhale and expel carbon dioxide when we exhale. This process is vital because oxygen allows the production of energy in our body's cells and is essential for maintaining all our vital functions.

The respiratory system is composed of a set of organs and structures that facilitate this gas exchange. Among them are the upper respiratory tract (nose and pharynx), lower respiratory tract (trachea, bronchi, bronchioles), and the lungs. Each of these organs and structures plays an essential role in respiration.

Additionally, the respiratory system is closely linked to the circulatory system. The inhaled oxygen reaches the lungs, where it is absorbed by the bloodstream and carried to the cells. Meanwhile, the carbon dioxide produced as a result of cellular metabolism is collected by the blood and transported to the lungs, from where it is eliminated when we exhale.

Therefore, studying the respiratory system is essential to understand how our body functions, how we produce energy, and how we stay alive. Moreover, understanding this system allows us to better comprehend respiratory diseases such as asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia, among others.

The COVID-19 pandemic, a disease caused by the novel coronavirus that primarily affects the respiratory system, also highlights the importance of this topic. Knowledge about how our respiratory system works can help understand the discussions and measures taken to tackle the pandemic.

Practical Activity: "Take a Deep Breath and Explore the Respiratory System!"

Project Objective

This activity aims to help students understand in a practical and visual way the functioning of the human respiratory system, its parts, and the role of each one, as well as explore the importance of this system for maintaining life.

Detailed Project Description

To carry out this activity, students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members, and each group will have the task of creating a three-dimensional model of the human respiratory system using recyclable materials. Each group will be responsible for researching, planning, building, and presenting their model to the class, explaining in detail the functioning of the respiratory system and the function of each of its parts.

Additionally, each group will have to present a written report containing the details of the model construction, the explanation of the respiratory system's functioning, the bibliography used, and the group's conclusions about the project.

Necessary Materials

For the construction of the model, groups can use various types of recyclable materials such as PET bottles, straws, balloons, cardboard, newspaper, among others. Materials to adorn the model such as adhesive tape, glue, paints, and colored pens will also be necessary. Creativity will be crucial in assembling the model.

Step-by-Step for the Activity

  1. Research: The group should research the human respiratory system, its parts, functions, and importance for maintaining life. They should also identify possible diseases that can affect this system and how they impact respiratory functions.

  2. Planning: After the research, the group should plan their model. This planning should include a drawing of the model, identifying the parts of the respiratory system that will be represented, and a list of materials needed for construction.

  3. Construction: The group should then build their model, representing the parts of the respiratory system identified in the research. The model should visually demonstrate how inhalation and exhalation occur, showing the entry of oxygen and the exit of carbon dioxide.

  4. Presentation: The students will present the model to the class, explaining the functioning of the respiratory system, the function of each represented part, and how gas exchange occurs.

  5. Report: After the presentation, the group should produce a written report containing the introduction (contextualization of the project), development (detailed description of the model, the functioning of the respiratory system, and the methodology used in construction), conclusions, and the bibliography used.

Conclusions and Project Deliverables

At the end of the activity, each group will have produced a three-dimensional model representing the respiratory system and a detailed report about the project.

The report should first situate the reader about what the respiratory system is, its importance, and real-world application, as well as the objective of this project (Introduction). Then, it should present the theory that underpins the project, a detailed description of the activity, the methodology employed, and the results obtained (Development). In the conclusion, the student should revisit the main points, explain the learnings, and the conclusions drawn from the project. Finally, the group should cite all the bibliographic references consulted for the activity (Bibliography).

Students should manage their time for research, model construction, and report writing within a one-month period. Teamwork will be fundamental for the project's success.

At the end of the project, students will have gained a deeper understanding of how the respiratory system works, how the digestive and respiratory systems collaborate in the body's nutrition process, and will have developed skills in teamwork, time management, research, oral presentation, and report writing.
