Hello there, young scientists! Ready for an incredible journey through the marvellous machine that is our body? Our project will take us on an expedition to explore the Respiratory System, a key part of our organism that enables us to do one of the most important things for our survival: breathe!
The Respiratory System is made up of a set of organs and structures that work together to help us breathe. Did you know that, on average, we breathe over 20,000 times a day? This happens thanks to our nose, mouth, trachea, lungs, and many other incredible parts of our body. We breathe to get the oxygen our body needs to function and to eliminate carbon dioxide, which is a gas produced as "waste" from the functioning of our body.
Importance of the Respiratory System
By now you must be wondering: why is it so important to know and understand the Respiratory System? Well, the answer is simple: without it, we wouldn't be able to live! Our lungs, which are the main part of this system, are so essential that if you take the air out of them, they collapse and lose their ability to function. This is why it is crucial to take good care of our Respiratory System.
Furthermore, understanding how this system works also helps us better understand how our body works. Did you know that breathing is a process that involves many other parts of our body, like our heart and muscles? That's right! When we run or do physical exercise, for example, our heart beats faster and we breathe more quickly to provide our body with the oxygen it needs. Fascinating, isn't it?

Practical Activity: "Travelling Through the Respiratory System"
Objective of the Project
The objective of this project is to allow students to explore and understand the functioning of the human Respiratory System. Through a practical, playful, and collaborative activity, students will understand the parts of the Respiratory System, the importance of each one of them, and how they work together to make breathing possible.
Project Description
Students, in groups of 3 to 5, will create a "Respiratory System Tunnel". Each group will be responsible for building a tunnel representing the different structures of the Respiratory System and explaining the role of each one of them. The groups will also present a short play inside the tunnel, demonstrating how breathing happens.
Necessary Materials
- Cardboard or other material to build the tunnel
- Paints, markers, crayons, etc. to decorate the tunnel
- Scissors and glue
- Paper and pens to write down explanations
- Costumes and props for the play (optional)
Step by Step

Group Formation: The teacher will create groups of 3 to 5 students.

Research: Each group should research the parts of the Respiratory System (nose, mouth, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, and lungs) and the role of each one of them in breathing.

Tunnel Planning: Based on their research, the groups should plan how they will build their tunnel, so that each part of the Respiratory System is represented and explained.

Tunnel Construction: Using the provided materials, the groups should build the tunnel, painting and decorating the different parts of the Respiratory System. They should also write explanations on the role of each structure.

Preparing the Play: Inside the tunnel, students should rehearse a short play demonstrating how breathing happens. They can use costumes and props to represent the different parts of the Respiratory System, if they want to.

Presentation and Evaluation: Each group will present their tunnel and play to the class. After the presentations, students will have the chance to explore the other groups' tunnels, reinforcing their learning. The teacher will evaluate participation, understanding of the subject, and creativity in the presentation.
Delivery Format
The project will be delivered through the presentation of the tunnel and the play to the class. Additionally, each group must deliver a sheet with explanations about the parts of the Respiratory System. This sheet can be handwritten or typed, but it must be legible and organized.
