A linguistic register is the way we use language in different situations. For example, when we talk to our friends, we use a more informal register, with slang and expressions of our own. On the other hand, when we write an essay for school, we use a more formal register, with careful grammar rules and vocabulary.

Communicative Contexts in Portuguese

Portuguese is spoken by millions of people worldwide, and each of them uses it in a unique way. In different countries where Portuguese is spoken, there are variations in how we use the language, according to the communicative context.

For example, in Brazil, we use a lot of slang and informal expressions in our daily speech, while in Portugal, speech is more formal and standardized. In addition, in each region of Brazil, there are variations in vocabulary, pronunciation, and even grammar.

Exploring the Diversity of the Portuguese Language

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to allow students to explore the different communicative contexts and linguistic varieties of the Portuguese language, developing their research, communication, and creativity skills.

Project Description

Each group of students will choose a Lusophone country (a country where Portuguese is spoken) to research about the culture and language of that country. The group will need to collect information about the different communicative contexts and linguistic varieties present in that country, and present their findings in a creative and interactive way.

Necessary Materials

• Internet access for research
• Books and encyclopedias about the chosen country (if available)
• Paper sheets and pens for notes
• Various materials for the final presentation (may include cardboard, magazines, scissors, glue, etc.)

Step by Step

1. Group Formation and Country Selection

Students will form groups of 3 to 5 people. Each group will choose a Lusophone country to research. It is important that each group chooses a different country.

2. Research and Information Collection

Groups will research about the chosen country, focusing on the culture and language of the country. Students should try to find information about the different communicative contexts and linguistic varieties present in that country. Notes should be taken during the research.

3. Preparation of the Presentation

Based on the collected information, groups will create a presentation to share their findings with the class. The presentation should include:

• An introduction to the chosen country, including information about the culture and language.
• Description of the different communicative contexts and linguistic varieties present in the country.
• Concrete examples of how language is used in different ways in different situations.

The form of the presentation is free, it can be a poster, a model, a play, a video, a song, a game, etc. Creativity is very welcome!

4. Final Presentation

Each group will present to the class. After all presentations, the class will have the opportunity to discuss the different cultures and languages of Lusophone countries, and how this enriches the Portuguese language.
