Project Goal

Project Description

Each team will receive a list of common English words. The team's job will be to figure out the prefixes and suffixes in each word, and thus unlock their meanings. Then, students will create a "Word Part Detective Dictionary" where they will record the words, their meanings, and their prefix and suffix analysis.

• Pencils, erasers, colored pens, rulers

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Group students into teams of 3-5. Each team will receive a list of 10 words (or more, depending on time).

2. Using a dictionary, have each team figure out the meaning of each word. Remember that you can use the context of the word and the other word parts to help you understand.

3. Once you have figured out the meaning of each word, identify the prefix and suffix in each word. Write them down next to each word.

4. Now, think about what each prefix and suffix adds to the meaning of the base word. Does it make the word more specific? Does it change the action or feeling the word gives?
